Rocks 3 Types of Rocks: Igneous Sedimentary Metamorphic

Igneous rocks are formed from magma or lava. Igneous means “made from fire or heat.” When the rock is liquid & inside the earth, it is called magma. Outside the earth it is called lava. Igneous rocks are formed from magma or lava.

Igneous When magma cools under the Earth’s surface it becomes rock! We call rocks that cool INSIDE the Earth INTRUSIVE IGNEOUS ROCK.

Igneous We call rocks that cool OUTSIDE the Earth EXTRUSIVE IGNEOUS ROCK.

Igneous Intrusive vs. Extrusive Igneous Rock Intrusive Rocks Extrusive Rocks Cool Slowly Cool Quickly Forms Big Mineral Crystals Forms VERY tiny Mineral Crystals

Igneous BIG PINK AND BLACK CRYSTALS NO CRYSTALS, FULL OF HOLES! Intrusive Rock Extrusive Rock BIG PINK AND BLACK CRYSTALS NO CRYSTALS, FULL OF HOLES!

Igneous Intrusive Rock Extrusive Rock Large Black Crystals TINY White Crystals

Intrusive or Extrusive? Igneous Intrusive or Extrusive?

Igneous Extrusive There are no visible crystals and the rock is full of holes. This rock must have cooled quickly.

Intrusive or Extrusive? Igneous Intrusive or Extrusive?

There are very large crystals, which indicate slow cooling Igneous Intrusive There are very large crystals, which indicate slow cooling

Intrusive or Extrusive? Igneous Intrusive or Extrusive?

Igneous Intrusive There are several large crystals. Large crystals are formed when magma cools slowly.

How are igneous rocks grouped? Sample test question: How are igneous rocks grouped? A. by the shape and size of the rock sample B. by how quickly the molten magma cooled C. by the place in the world the sample was found. D. by whether there are layers or bands of crystals
