Igneous Rocks

Igneous Rocks Igneous rocks are formed from molten rock, which could either be lava or magma, which cools and solidifies.

Classifying igneous rocks according to their formation. Where do they form AND made of magma or lava? Intrusive (magma) and Extrusive (lava) How do they cool? Slow = Large crystals Fast = Small or No Crystals What they are made of (mineral composition)? Mafic (dark) and Felsic (light)

Are Magma and Lava Different? Magma is molten rock that is BELOW the earth’s surface. Lava is molten rock that is ABOVE the earth’s surface.

There are two types of igneous rocks. Intrusive Extrusive

Intrusive Igneous Rocks

INtrusive Igneous Rocks They form from magma.

INtrusive Igneous Rocks They cool slowly.

INtrusive Igneous Rocks They cool BELOW or IN the Earth.

INtrusive Igneous Rocks They form rocks with LARGE crystals and a coarse grained texture.

Extrusive Igneous Rocks

EXtrusive Igneous Rocks They form from lava.

EXtrusive Igneous Rocks They cool fast.

EXtrusive Igneous Rocks They cool on the Earth’s surface or after they EXit the inside of the Earth.

EXtrusive Igneous Rocks They have small crystals, are fine-grained, and smooth. They can also contain air pockets.
