Phonics Letters and sounds is a phonics resource which aims to build children’s speaking and listening skills, as well as prepare children for learning to read and write by developing their phonic knowledge and skills. Key words: Phoneme – the smallest unit of sound in a word. Grapheme – the letter or a number of letters that represent a phoneme. Segment – the ability to split up a word into its individual phonemes (ie. s-o-ck) Blend – the ability to draw individual sounds together to pronounce a word (ie. sock) Hand outs will be available for extra information and support.

Autumn Term – Revision of phase 2,3 and 4 Phase 2 graphemes: s a t p i n m d g o c k ck e u r h Phase 3 graphemes: j w x y z zz qu ch sh th ng ai ee igh oa oo (book) oo (zoo) ar or ur ow oi ear air Phase 4: No new grapheme-phoneme correspondence are taught in this phase.
