Volume The amount of space that an object takes up. The basic unit of volume in the SI system is the liter. For smaller measures we will use the milliliter.

How do we measure the volume of a liquid? With a graduated cylinder

Graduated cylinders can have different measurement increments. This graduated cylinder is labeled by 1mL

Graduated cylinders can have different measurement increments. This graduated cylinder is labeled by 5 mL.

To read a graduated cylinder, we look at the meniscus. A meniscus is the bottom of the curve in the surface of the water.

Read how many milliliters are in the graduated cylinder. _________

What are three objects that we could measure in liters? ________________________ What are three objects that we could measure in milliliters?

Conversions 1. 125 L = __________ cL 2. 25 mL= __________ L Kilo Kilo- Liter Hecto Hecto- Deka Deka- Unit Deci Deci- Centi Centi- Milli Milli- 1.  125 L = __________ cL 2.  25 mL= __________ L 3.  .952 kL = __________ mL 4.  2845mL= __________ kL 5.  2.678cL = __________ mL

Length X Width X Height = Volume How do we measure the volume of a regular object? Width Height Length With the formula: Length X Width X Height = Volume

What unit do we use when calculating volume of solids? Volume of a solid is measured in cm3 or cc- cubic centimeter. cm3 = 1 mL Why? When multiplying the object’s length, width and height, the cm units are also multiplied cm x cm x cm = cm³

Let’s Practice: Suppose a cereal box is 10 centimeters long, 4 centimeters wide, and 20 centimeters high. What would be the volume of the box? 10 cm X 4 cm x 20 cm = 800 cm3

How do we calculate the volume of an irregular solid? Water Displacement Before After

How does the water displacement method work? Record the volume of water in the graduated cylinder Carefully place the irregular solid into the water. Record the volume of the water plus the object Subtract the volume of the water alone from the volume of the water plus the object

How do we calculate the volume of an irregular solid? What is the volume of the dinosaur? ___________ New Volume____5.6_____ - Original Volume____4.8____ Volume of dino=_.8 cubic centimeters___
