What do you need to know to predict the weather? What are the atmospheric conditions like today?

Characteristics of the ATMOSPHERE

The atmosphere (atm) is... 1. mixture of gasses that surrounds Earth (any planet really) 2. provides air to breathe

protects us from dangerous solar rays maintains habitable temp. creates weather/water cycle

made of this mixture of gases-

about 700km thick and weighs 14.7 lbs per inch

has layers (just like everything else we talked about concerning the Earth this year.)

held to Earth by GRAVITY creating air pressure (air pushing on you) http://s.hswstatic.com/gif/hot-air-balloon-atmosphere.jpg

As you go higher in the troposphere air pressure, temp As you go higher in the troposphere air pressure, temp. and density decrease. Air Pressure decreases (less air above) Temperature decreases (amount & way solar energy’s absorbed by gases changes) Air density decreases (air molecules spread out) http://www.kentchemistry.com/links/GasLaws/aircolumn.jpg
