NEREUS GNSS WG and PEGASE Project One of the main objectives of the PEGASE project is to implement  adequate coordination mechanisms and a permanent exchange of information  among the different national, regional and local Galileo/EGNOS-related initiatives. This allows also to the NEREUS Members to have a wider and more comprehensive view about what is happening in the other networks involved in PEGASE, like ENCADRE and ESINET.   In this perspective, our task within PEGASE consists in collecting information on existing or emerging GNSS initiatives and activities undertaken in the NEREUS' Regions .

GNSS regional experiences Specific clusters to boost innovation in specific industrial/thematic areas technical platforms or innovation platforms GNSS applications promotion centres Calls for tenders and specific R&S budget allocated demonstration areas Specific GNSS related procurement opportunities at regional levels GNSS specialised incubators Organisation of major GNSS related events User’s forum Networking in non space clusters Education and training course Business models contest & masters competition investors forum to raise the private funding needed by SMEs And any other regional good practices to be highlighted

Experiences from 16 regions (7 MS): Aquitaine Azores Baden – Württemberg Region Basilicata Region Bavaria Region Bremen Castilla y Leon Comunidad de Madrid East Midlands Hessen Region Lazio (Filas) Mazowieck Voivodeship - Mazovia Region Mecklenburg - Western Pomerania Midi Pyrénées Piedmont region Veneto Region http://www.gnss-in-eu-regions.info/

Regional experiences These experiences cover a wide range of different activities, such as: clusters: Madrid Aerospace Cluster and the Bavarian cluster (bavAIRia e.V.), test bed of Galileo: GATE –The German GALILEO Test and Development Environment and the SEA GATE- the operational maritime Galileo test environment in the Port of Rostock. GNSS applications promotion centers and research bodies: GRACE, East Midland centre of excellence, Forum SatNav MIT BW e.V. of Baden Wurttemberg,, Cesah – Center for Satellite navigation Hesse. A number of projects: funded by different structures and showing several potential GNSS applications Just a first survey that cannot represent the volume of GNSS activities within the NEREUS regions and that need to be enlarged to other regions in Europe.

NEREUS - PEGASE WORKSHOP “Regional approaches to the European Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) programme” 24 March 2010 – Bruxelles to discuss the present status and the next developments of the GNSS program, To present the most relevant regional experiences already acquired in some regions. The event was open to regional and local authorities, universities and research centres, experts, policy makers, representatives of the private sectors and SME http://www.nereus-regions.eu/PEGASE-GNSS-WORKSHOP

Plus and minus + wide range of applications, addressed both to the public and to the private interests + fast introduction of “high tech” and fast “capacity building” especially through SME + many research institutions linked to enterprises, spin-off towards SME - not uniform, somewhere little awareness of regional policy makers - general limited support from regional administrations (with exceptions) - general still insufficient weight in EU projects - few dedicated experiences in high education

Challenge We are at the beginning of a long road, but properly addressed; first milestones have been already successfully passed We need to have to go uphill and to look forward; and when well be tired to look forward, we should look even more forward (Lord Baden Powell, 1938)
