Using LCM to solve word problems Practice Problems Using LCM to solve word problems

The overall idea is we are MUTLIPLYING—just like multiples. Find LCM if we are: having an event that is repeating over and over… figuring out how much to get of different items in packages of different quantities so that we have the same total amount Finding out when 2 or more things will happen at the same time finding the LEAST, SMALLEST, MINIMUM, etc. The overall idea is we are MUTLIPLYING—just like multiples.

Applying what we have learned… Ben exercises every 4 days and Isabel every 6 days. Ben and Isabel both exercised today. How many days will pass before they exercise again? They will meet again at the gym in 12 days.

The pink monorail and the green monorail leave the WDW depot at 9:00 am. The pink monorail arrives at the Magic Kingdom every 9 minutes. The lime green monorail arrives at the Magic Kingdom every 15 minutes. At what time will both monorails arrive at the Magic Kingdom at the same time? The LCM of 9 and 15 is 45.

Creepy! Rudy is shopping for items to put in Halloween goody bags. He finds a package of 10 wax lips and a package of 8 sticky spiders. What is the least number of packages of each item Rudy can buy so that he has the same number of lips and spiders in each goody bag and nothing left over? Find the LCM of 10 and 8 which is 40. Now determine how many packs you need of each to have 40 items of each product. You will need 4 packs of wax lips and 5 packs of sticky spiders.

Radio Give Away Star 94 gave away a discount coupon for every sixth caller. Every twentieth caller received free concert tickets. Which caller was first to receive both a coupon and a concert ticket? It will be the 60th caller.

Team Shirts Coach is ordering shirts and shorts for the track team. Shorts come in packs of 3, and shirts come in packs of 6. If there are 36 team members, what is the least number of packs of each he should buy so that everyone has a pair of shorts and a shirt with none left over? He will need to order 12 packs of shorts and 6 packs of shirts.
