O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth Your praise O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth Your praise. (Psalms 51:15 NKJV)
God hates. haughty eyes (Prov God hates...haughty eyes (Prov. 6:16-17a, NKJV) Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” (1 Pet. 5:5, NKJV)
Be Clothed With Humility 1 Pet. 5:5
Humility Must Be Chosen Be Clothed With Humility Humility Must Be Chosen Jesus, Holy Spirit did Phil. 2:6-7; Jn. 14:16 Have I? Why should I? Heb. 3:4; 2 Pet. 1:19; Jn. 1:1,14 Humility, without God I. Humility must be chosen (“put on”) A. Verses Jesus did Phil. 2:6-7 Spirit did Jn. 14:16 (role of Helper); 16:13-14 (whatever He hears, He will speak) Col 3:12-13 Do I? B. Why would I choose humility? Thinking soberly, serious (Rom. 12:3) about 1. The physical universe Heb. 3:4 when I realize “I, nor all of mankind combined, could build this but based on how daily life works, someone had to—intricate order, patterns, plans.” (but who did it? who is God?) 2. The prophetic word made more sure 2 Pet. 1:19 man also could not do this alone 3. God became flesh for me and His grace and truth teaches humility Jn. 1:1, 14 4. Love neighbor as self Mt. 22:39 their basic needs are same as mine—why elevate mine? C. Without God 1. I miss the kind of humility God reveals and expects, which begins with humility before Him 2. Humility and pride are like vanilla & chocolate--personal opinions, neither is admirable or despicable. 3. No reason to be humble---all people are equal in value and man is the highest authority we see 4. If judged based on visible results, some people are highly successful b/c of pride = a valid option
Gifts for the Humble Ps. 25:9; 149:4; Prov. 22:4; 1 Pet. 5:6 Be Clothed With Humility Gifts for the Humble Ps. 25:9; 149:4; Prov. 22:4; 1 Pet. 5:6 (Ps. 10:17; 18:27; 34:2; 69:32; 147:6; Pr. 15:33; 18:12) II. God offers gifts to the humble (cf Ps. 10:17; 18:27; 34:2; 69:32; 147:6; Pr. 15:33; 18:12) A. Taught by God Ps. 25:9 1. In matters you want to learn ()—do you care who your teacher is? 2. In matters which affect your soul/eternity, your family—do you care who your teacher is? 3. Have you learned how God teaches you? a. Heb. 1:1-2 speaking through prophets (incl their writings), now by His Son b. Never by speaking directly to each of His ppl—always be chosen messengers B. Beautify with salvation Ps. 149:4 1. How much time, attn, and money do we spend on beautifying ourselves? children? 2. How much emphasis do I put on being humble in every relationship--God, family, neighbor, brethren? 3. Today, God beautifies the humble with salvation a. by faith (Heb. 11:6), as I learn all I could not know without God b. by repentance (Acts 17:30), as I admit I have been wrong c. by confession (Rom. 10:10), as I admit I am not the Lord of my life d. by baptism (Mk. 16:16), as I have to trust God saves me then just as He promised without visible proof, in contrast with a host of other common teachings (saved by baptism before I believe, saved by believing before baptism) e. This is the beginning of a beautiful life C. Riches, honor, life Prov. 22:4 1. What kind of riches, honor, and life do you think God guarantees to the humble? 2. What kind of riches, honor, and life did Jesus receive for telling the religious leaders...(Mt. 23:9)? 3. What kind of riches, honor, and life did Paul receive for being content with much or little? (Phil. 4:11-12) D. Exalted 1 Pet. 5:6 1. This is not seeking selfish exaltation “I’ll be elevated by pushing others down so I can get my way.” 2. It is being exalted in a way that elevates the importance of others and glorifies God 1 Pet. 4:8-11 -- Only God can make promises like these and keep them---and He is doing so to the humble.
Humility Connected To Other Responsibilities Be Clothed With Humility Humility Connected To Other Responsibilities Pr. 22:4 Jam. 4:6-7 1 Pet. 5:5 III. Humility is a responsibility, directly connected to other responsibilities A. Fear the LORD Pr 22:4 By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches and honor and life. 1. Fear is the response of a proper view of God (there are others, Shepherd, Rock, Helper, etc) 2. Humility is the response of a proper view of myself 3. Constantly learning about Him and about myself (words, deeds, plan, priorities, etc) produces F and H B. Submit to God Jam. 4:6-7 God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Therefore submit to God. 1. Without the right view of God and self, I will never be humble, as James writes 2. But God is not pleased if I only have the right view---I must submit to Him, meaning I must deny self. C. Submit to each other 1 Pet. 5:5 Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble." 1. In the context (see v1ff), Paul is talking about the local church 2. What He says is based on the fact that Jesus is the Chief Shepherd (not claim that for himself or Pope) 3. When Christians commit to each other (= church), they can only grow if they are working together and they can only work together if they are willing to submit to one another a. in every group-decision, from how often to assemble on the Lord’s Day to what kind of copier to have b. if we refuse to follow Jesus’ plan to submit to each other (work together), we refuse to follow Jesus.
