Presentation transcript:

Welcome to the Phillips Nuclear Power Plant Please Have a Seat – Your Training Will Begin Momentarily

RULES You have only SIX MINUTES to move all radioactive waste into “CONTAINMENT” – more than six minutes of exposure could kill you. If you drop the radioactive waste or touch it with anything other than the designated supplies, you increase your radiation exposure (and gain a FIFTEEN SECOND PENALTY). ONLY THE TEACHER can pick up spilled radiation – if you DO drop radioactive waste, you must return to the POWER PLANT and try again. The teacher will return the waste to the plant using protective gear. DO NOT TOUCH IT. Once a material has been used to transfer waste to the CONTAINMENT center, it must be disposed of into CONTAINMENT as well – it is now contaminated. ONLY the PLANT MANAGER and EMPLOYEE may assist in moving the radiation – the SAFETY OFFICER must watch, keep track of contamination leaks, and the total exposure time for each team.

POST-LAB PROMPTS Any general thoughts on the activity and its connection to real nuclear waste disposal? Why do you think nuclear waste disposal so controversial and difficult? In what ways do you think contamination spread can be minimized? For how long must radioactive waste be contained?
