What does it take to be a good coach? What is it about them as coaches that makes them and their teams so successful? How has Sir Alex Ferguson steered Manchester United to 12 Premier League wins, 5 FA Cup trophies, 4 League Cup trophies and 3 European Cup trophies? How has Dave Brailsford CBE led British cycling teams to 14 Olympic Medals (including 8 golds) and a Tour de France victory? Images of those named

What do you need to start? The roles and responsibilities of a coach are not simply to organise a training session; they include: Leader Friend Instructor Motivator Analyst Disciplinarian Maintaining their own knowledge Add images that represent these areas as they come in Ensuring safety and security

What skills will you need? Coaches need a variety of skills and techniques to learn about performers and to help them develop. These include: How do they identify what would work best for their performers? Planning Analysing Demonstration Adaptation Goal setting Problem solving Video or images related to points above Communication

How do you plan a session? What else will you need to plan for? Remember to include a warm-up and cool down. How good are your performers? Can you make the session harder or easier if you need to? How long will you spend on activities? What do you want the performers to learn or improve?

Do it! What skills do you need to utilise during the session? Make it enjoyable as well as productive What happens if things don’t go to plan? What’s your level of involvement? Are you going to get stuck in? Images that show how someone might be able to reflect on their performance

Learn from it? How did it go? Was it too easy or too hard? Did the performers enjoy it? Did the demonstrations go well? Did you provide feedback for the performers? How will you plan the next session based on how this went? Do you need to develop any areas yourself?

What will you learn? The roles, responsibilities and skills of sports coaches. The techniques used by coaches to improve the performance of athletes. Plan sports coaching sessions. Deliver and review sports coaching sessions. Use image of Young people being coached
