Search engines By Isabella Thorpe and Scarlet Hartley

What is a Search Engine? A search engine is A search engine is a web-based tool that enables users to locate information on the World Wide Web. Search engines utilize automated software applications (referred to as robots, bots, or spiders) that travel along the Web, following links from page to page, site to site.

How do Search Engines work?

How do you use a search engine? You only need to put down the key words used to find your search! For example instead of searching What is the capital of Spain all you need to search is capital Spain! Of course you would get the answer (Madrid!) if you search something exactly the right website all others will be filtered out and you will find your search at the top!

Operators and Boolean Logic! In Boolean logic you need to use OR, AND or NOT! When you use AND in your internet search it will use both terms you have put in! just like explained in the picture!

Domain Name In a domain name there are so many clues to what is the official site for things. For example when you are searching for things to do with the government the domain name will end in .gov. Education = .edu or .ac.uk Organisations = .org.uk World wide companies = .com UK companies = .co.uk Don’t be tricked by the advertisement sites they are not always the real ones.

Hoax, spoof, facts and opinion Beware of bias and hoax websites because they do not always give you real information and sometimes give you fake information. Do not trust bias and hoax websites! You should always check other websites just to make shore you’ve got the wright information.
