Food inspection reports published at findsmiley Food inspection reports published at findsmiley.dk and establishment websites for all food establishments 3 types Retail - with smiley Wholesalers with and without processing – without smiley Slaughterhouses etc. with more than 12 annual inspections - Summaries without smiley

Smileys and inspection results 1 No sanctions Minor violations of the law are registered Warning/enjoining order 3 Injunction (command to do something specific) or prohibition order Establishment fined, reported to police or approval withdrawn Inspectors can give guidance and there might be minor non-compliances and the inspection results can still be 1. At slaughterhouses with daily or weekly inspections we have a special system for minor violations of the law. We register them and if they occur 3 times within 6 months we give e.g. a warning. Enjoining order warning - certain rules must be observed Injunction - a clarification of how the establishments is to comply with the law and a command to do something specific e.g. revise the procedure for the company´s own check programme Prohibitory order – a clarification of what the company is not allowed to do and a specific act is prohibited/forbidden e.g. the production of a certain product Happy smile Small smile Straight face Sour smiley Happy smile is the most common

Why Smiley system To inform how well establishments comply with the rules, so consumers can make an informed choice on where to make their business Give establishments an incentive to comply with the rules thus increasing food safety Fast publishing of inspection results – both positive and negative – on all food legislation areas

It works… Virtually all consumers know the scheme, and many use the information when choosing a shop or a restaurant Many companies take action to improve their standard and stay on their tiptoes to have a good smiley The proportion of companies complying with the rules rose after the introduction of the smiley system The Scheme has improved uniformity and increased quality of inspections and inspection reports Virtually all consumers know the scheme (100 %) A majority of the consumers look at the inspection report before entering a shop og restaurant (85 %) (33 % both read the inspection report and look at the smiley) Half of the consumers are affected by the smiley when choosing a shop or restaurant (50 %) (41 % only sometimes)

Requirements - Challenges Inspectors must be able to withstand pressure from food business operators eager to get happy smiles Inspectors must be confident in rules, sanctions, documentation etc. – everybody can see the final inspection report When smiley result is 3 or 4 or if the inspector is in doubt if a warning should be given (result 2) a preliminary inspection report is made. This report is not published. When inspection frequency is low it can take long time to gain or regain an elite smiley
