Discipleship Seminar (DS) Essentials of Discipleship (EOD) Module #1 - Who is God? Module #2 - What is sin? Module #3 - Who is God the Son?

Discipleship Seminar (DS) Essentials of Discipleship (EOD) 1.1 What must a non-believer know about Jesus before they will understand the Gospel?

The Person of Jesus Christ Jesus Christ is God and existed before creation. Jesus Christ is the second person of the Trinity.

Jesus was fully God and fully man united in one person of Christ 3.1a He is Omnipotent (Infinite Powerful / Almighty) 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” Mt 28:18

Jesus was fully God and fully man united in one person of Christ 3.1a He is Omnipotent iii. Over Sin (Matt 9:1-8) Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town. 2 Some men brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.” 3 At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!” 4 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? 5 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 6 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.”

Jesus was fully God and fully man united in one person of Christ 3.1b He is Omniscient (All Knowing) 29Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.” Jn 16: 29 - 30

Jesus was fully God and fully man united in one person of Christ 3.1b He is worshipped as God 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” 10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’ Mt 4:9

Jesus was fully God and fully man united in one person of Christ 3.2 a He has a human body Human Parentage 4 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Gal 4:4-5 Body, Soul & Spirit Tired, Thirsty, Hungry, Sleep Emotions Suffered, Bled, Died and Buried

Jesus was fully God and fully man united in one person of Christ 3.2 b He lives like a man People of his hometown – Nazareth 56 “Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” Mt 13:56 His own brothers 5 For even his own brothers did not believe in him. Jn 7:5

Why must Jesus be fully God & fully human? NCC Question #23 Q: Why must the Redeemer be truly God? A: That because of his divine nature his obedience and suffering would be perfect and effective; and also that he would be able to bear the righteous anger of God against sin and yet overcome death.

Why must Jesus be fully God & fully human? To be a Substitute Sacrifice (Heb 2:16-17) To be the One Mediator Between God and Men (1 Tim 2:5) To break the curse of Adam through Christ’s Obedience (Rm 5:18-19) To Sympathize Us As High Priest (Heb 2: 18; 4:15-16)

Why must Jesus be fully God & fully human? NCC Question #22 Q: Why must the Redeemer be truly God? A: That in human nature he might on our behalf perfectly obey the whole law and suffer the punishment for human sin; and also that he might sympathize with our weakness.

Why must Jesus be fully God & fully human? NCC Question #21 Q: What sort of Redeemer is needed to bring us back to God? A: One who is truly human and also truly God.

Jesus Calms the storm (Mt 8:23-27) Q: What did the passage tell us about the Person and Work of Jesus Christ? Jesus Is God – Almighty God He controls the storms (Nature)  The ability to control sea/storm is distinctively an OT character of God.

Jesus Calms the storm (Mt 8:23-27) “Life” Storm Chaos, trouble, problem & danger Rather avoid & choose not to be in it. Dangerous and Undesirable Real and not imaginary Can come suddenly, unexpectedly Beyond the experience and capability of men Deadly (Loss of peace) Call Jesus Jesus is truly God, Trust in Him for He is in control

Jesus at Gethsemane (Mt 26:36-44) Agony Jesus was fully human Experiencing agony of things to come v37 -38: He was sorrowful & troubled to the point of death. v38: Lonely and looking for emotional support. v39 (& 42/44): Faced with something that is humanly undesirable. Hoping for avoidance or escape. v40-41 (43): Emotional support was not there when needed. v 39 - Total submission: “ Yet not my will, but as you will”

Jesus at Gethsemane (Mt 26:36-44) “15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:14-16 Jesus is fully human, Trust in Him for He understands.

Who is Jesus to me? Jesus is truly God… …trust Him for He is in control Jesus is truly human … … trust Him for He understands
