Exam Prep

Target for Exam Prep Today we will explore a piece of visual literacy which will lead us to a sample poem. We will determine what the difference is between an emotional and intellectual response when we are consuming text. This will help us balance out thought and detail and improve our comprehension of the text. Importance of Vocab!!!

The texts that you will encounter in the exam will be opinionated and cause a reaction. They may even seem judgmental So, how do we craft a response to texts that cause us to have multiple reactions?

Response- word association/ first impressions

Inter-racial relationships can be problematic Emotional Response Intellectual Response First Response Politically Correct Response Sensitivity vs. Real World Consideration Personal Feelings 2nd thoughts Context Multiple Perspectives Critical Thinking Skills

Vocab

Shubenacadie Residential School

Shubenacadie In the Micmac language, Shubenacadie means "abounding in ground nuts" or "place where the red potato (i.e. Indian potato, grows. Shubenacadie was the location of the Shubenacadie Indian Residential School, a Canadian residential school, that was operated from 1923 to 1967 by two Roman Catholic orders,. This was the only Indian residential school in Atlantic Canada. The school building was destroyed in a fire in 1986 and today the property has been adapted for the Scotia Plastics factory.

Residential School, Reconciliation, Commission, Cultural Genocide Digging into Vocab Exam: Can’t stress enough how important it is that the words we confront are the keys to unlocking answers and clearing confusion. Residential School, Reconciliation, Commission, Cultural Genocide

BIG IDEA #1: HOW TO APPROACH A POEM When you are presented with a poem, read multiple times and activate the strategies of VISUALIZATION and QUESTIONING first! Ask Yourself 1. Who (subject/persona) is speaking? 2. Is there tension in the poem? 3. What is the speaker’s tone? 4. Where is the poet taking their reader (Is there a sense of place?) 5. Which images and words matter to this? Are you 100% certain about ALL the possible meanings? 6. Are there spots where you know you are dealing with figurative language that can be unpacked?
