Expansion of the EU Date: Objective Understand how Britain and Ireland joined the EU Understand the importance of the EU Warm-up: homework page 100 Name three of the men who helped to start the search for European Unity? Why did they start and what did they hope to achieve? Write a short account of the Council of Europe. Name two of the institutions that laid the foundations of the EEC and write a short account of each of them. Give the main terms of the Treaty of Rome.

Notes Within 10 years of its creation, the EEC had one of the highest standards of living in the world. This success encouraged other countries to join. The British did not wish to join at first (ties to America and their own Empire) and tried to set up their own economic alliance called the European Free Trade Association. This failed and they realised they had to join. (Questions 1-3 page 104)

Notes Britain joining the EEC threatened Ireland, who in 1961 sold over 90% of our exports to Britain. We were forced to apply too. Charles de Gaulle, the French President, blocked these entries due to deep suspicion. He did not want Britain taking over the alliance. From 1961 to 1969, he blocked our entry and theirs. (Questions 1-3 page 104)

Notes President De Gaulle resigned in 1969. His successor George Pompidou was friendlier and allowed Britain to join the EEC. In 1972, the Irish government held a referendum to seek the people’s approval to join. Over 70% voted for membership and Ireland joined the EEC in 1973 with Britain and Denmark. (Questions 1-3 page 104)

Notes After the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union in 1990, all countries in Eastern Europe ended communism and became democracies. All applied to join the alliance. The MAASTRICHT TREATY, 1991: Renamed the EEC the European Union (EU) Introduced a common currency, the euro, to take effect in 12 countries in 2002. Common citizenship for all EU members (Questions 1-3 page 104)
