Junior and senior years, students study six subjects selected from the subject groups. Usually three subjects are studied at higher level, (2 year courses) and the remaining three subjects are studied at standard level (1 year courses). All three parts of the core—extended essay, theory of knowledge and creativity, action, service—are compulsory and are central to the philosophy of the Diploma Program.
How Do Students Earn An IB Diploma? Students earn a score on a scale of 1-7 for each subject area they take a test. Students must score a 24 or higher to earn the IB diploma. There are a few exceptions to this. Students must also complete all CAS hours, the Extended Essay and pass the Theory of Knowledge class. Students can earn 1-3 bonus points, depending on the quality of their Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge essay.
