Send Prince Escalus a message Poke message Information Verona, Italy Networks: Birthday: May 29, 1555 Hometown: Friends Wise Scholar Character analysis: This passage serves as an opportunity to show the audience that Prince Escalus is not someone to be wronged, while also being someone who is able to use reason to make important decisions. It is clear that he is angry about the death of Tybalt, and to a much bigger degree, Mercutio, but is able to be clear headed enough to choose banishment for Romeo rather than execution. Despite his clear loyalty to his family member Mercutio, he still banishes Romeo with the threat that if he does not leave Verona quickly, “that hour is his last.” He will show leniency, but if that leniency is not taken, he has no qualms about executing Romeo for his crimes. His forcefulness and even handed rule is respected by all and ignored by none. March 30, 2016 Mercutio Paris Marilyn Bobby Jackie Robert

It also uses a metaphor to describe the rage between the two families as a fire that can only be quenched by “purple fountains issuing from [their] veins,” which is a metaphor for blood. This figurative language shows us how powerful the hatred is between the two families. The repetition of “three” and “thrice” also shows how tired the Prince is of these repeated outbursts between the families. March 30, 2016 Mercutio Paris Marilyn Bobby Jackie Robert

This fight was all started by servants to the two families. Gregory and Sampson, servants to the Capulet household, provoked Abram, a servant to the Montagues. Benvolio drew his sword to stop the fight, but then Tybalt arrived and challenged Benvolio. The fight and the Prince’s reaction demonstrate the extent of the Montague-Capulet feud early in the play, showing the audience how quickly insults can lead to violence and how disruptive the feud has been to Verona. Where be these enemies? Capulet, Montague, See what a scourge is laid upon your hate, That heaven finds means to kill your joys with love! And I, for winking at your discords too, Have lost a brace of kinsmen. All are punished. Send Prince Escalus a message Poke message Information Verona, Italy Networks: Birthday: May 29, 1555 Hometown: Friends Wise Scholar Thematic analysis: Fate can perform a harsher act of justice than man when circumstances lead to unintended tragedy. This quotation takes place after Romeo and Juliet have killed themselves. Throughout the play, Prince Escalus has been an arbiter of justice, as it pertains to the laws of Verona. However, at the end of the play, the Prince points out to Lord Capulet and Lord Montague that it is the fate of the star-crossed lovers that provides the harshest punishment. The Prince would like both heads of the houses to realize that their hatred brought about this unforeseen and tragic result, a result that is a more severe punishment than even the Prince could dole out.
