Homecrest Presbyterian Church Worship of the Lord’s Day August 7th, 2016 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gathering Around the WORD Call To Worship (Based on Psalm 50:1-2) The heavens declare the righteousness of God. The earth declares God’s beauty. From the rising of the sun to its setting God’s word shines forth in glory. May God declare God’s glory upon us. Let us come and worship God!

Gathering Hymn # 403 “Open Now Thy Gates of Beauty” Open now thy gates of beauty, Zion, let me enter there, where my soul in joyful duty waits for God who answers prayer; O how blessed is this place, filled with solace, light, and grace.

Gathering Hymn # 403 “Open Now Thy Gates of Beauty” Gracious God, I come before thee; come thou also unto me; where we find thee and adore thee, there a heaven on earth must be; to my heart O enter thou; let it be thy temple now.

Gathering Hymn # 403 “Open Now Thy Gates of Beauty” Speak, O Lord, and I will hear thee; let thy will be done indeed; may I undisturbed draw near thee, while thou dost thy people feed. Here of life the fountain flows; here is balm for all our woes.

Gathering Around the WORD Call to Confession Even in our faithlessness, God loves us still and waits in mercy to forgive us. Trusting in the promises given at our baptism, let us confess our sin before God and one another.

Gathering Around the WORD Prayer of Confession (in unison) Holy God, you promise us a life full of blessing, but we do not always believe. You incite us to hope, but we fall back into fear. You urge us to give freely, but we cling to what we have. You call us to watch at all times for you, but we grow lazy and self-absorbed. Forgive us. Increase our hope, enlarge our hearts, and keep us alert to the wonders you work in the world every day. For the sake of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Gathering Around the WORD Declaraion of Forgivness Hear the good news Gathering Around the WORD Declaraion of Forgivness Hear the good news! By faith we have been saved, our guilty hearts washed clean. Refreshed, revived, and renewed, empowered by the Holy Spirit, live as ones who are forgiven and freed. Thanks be to God, Amen. Thanks be to God, Amen.

Gathering Around the WORD Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

Gathering Around the WORD Passing of the Peace of Christ

Proclaiming the WORD Message to the Youth/ Prayer of Illumination

Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16) 1Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. 3By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible.

Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16) 8By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going. 9By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been promised, as in a foreign land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 10For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16) 11By faith he received power of procreation, even though he was too old-and Sarah herself was barren-because he considered him faithful who had promised. 12Therefore from one person, and this one as good as dead, descendants were born, "as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore."

Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16) 13All of these died in faith without having received the promises, but from a distance they saw and greeted them. They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth, 14for people who speak in this way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15If they had been thinking of the land that they had left behind, they would have had opportunity to return. 16But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them.

Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (Luke 12:32-40) 32"Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (Luke 12:32-40) 35"Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; 36be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. 37Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. 38If he comes during the middle of the night, or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves.

Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (Luke 12:32-40) 39"But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour."

Proclaiming the WORD Homeland Security (Hebrews: 11:1-3, 8-16 and Luke 12:32-40)

Responding Hymn # 796 “We Come to You for Healing, Lord” We come to you for healing, Lord, of body, mind, and soul, and pray that by your Spirit’s touch we may again be whole.

Responding Hymn # 796 “We Come to You for Healing, Lord” As once you walked through ancient streets and reached toward those in pain, we know you come among us still with power to heal again.

Responding Hymn # 796 “We Come to You for Healing, Lord” You touch us through physicians’ skills, through nurses’ gifts of care, and through the love of faithful friends who lift our lives in prayer.

Responding Hymn # 796 “We Come to You for Healing, Lord” Through nights of pain and wakefulness, through days when strength runs low, grant us your gift of patience, Lord, your calming peace to know.

Responding Hymn # 796 “We Come to You for Healing, Lord” We come to you, O loving Lord, in our distress and pain, in trust that through our nights and days your grace will heal, sustain.

Responding to the WORD Affirmation of Faith

Bearing and Following the WORD into the World Announcements & Sharing of Joys and Concerns The Women's Group and the Afternoon Bible Study will not be meeting during the summer. They will resume in September.

Bearing and Following the WORD into the World Prayer of the People & The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven. Halloweth be thy name. Thy Kingdom come; Thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our debts; as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptations, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory forever. Amen.

Bearing and Following the WORD into the World Offering of our Gifts and our Lives

Bearing and Following the WORD into the World Doxology and Offertory Prayer

Communion Hymn # 494 “Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts” Jesus, thou joy of loving hearts, thou fount of life, thou light of all, from the best bliss that earth imparts we turn, unfilled, to heed thy call.

Communion Hymn # 494 “Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts” We taste thee, O thou living bread, and long to feast upon thee still; we drink of thee, the fountainhead, and thirst our souls from thee to fill.

Communion Hymn # 494 “Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts” O Jesus, ever with us stay; make all our moments calm and bright. O chase the night of sin away; shed o'er the world thy holy light.

Bearing and Following the WORD into the World Holy Communion Sisters and brothers, welcome to the joyful feast of the LORD for the people of God! Many will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south and sit at the table in the Kingdom of God. This is the Lord’s Table. Our Savior invites those who trust him to share the feast that He has prepared.

Bearing and Following the WORD into the World Holy Communion The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We come as the ones who are willing to surrender our security and partner with Christ in His ministry.

Bearing and Following the WORD into the World Holy Communion We praise you, O God. For you have inspired us to speak the truth and be honest with ourselves. We dare to come before you just as we are. Search our hearts and cleanse us from within, as we sing: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

Bearing and Following the WORD into the World Holy Communion Loving God, in gratitude we remember that on the night before crucifixion, Jesus took bread and after giving thanks to you broke it and gave it to the disciples, saying: “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Bearing and Following the WORD into the World Holy Communion In the same way after supper Jesus took the cup and after giving thanks, gave it to them and said: “This cup is the new covenant sealed in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” In gratitude for what Christ has done for us, we proclaim our hope and our joy.

Bearing and Following the WORD into the World Holy Communion With thanks and praise we offer ourselves to you, O God. Sharing this holy meal, remembering Christ’s dying and rising, and praying: Come Lord Jesus! Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

Bearing and Following the WORD into the World Holy Communion Every time we eat this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim His death and resurrection until He comes again.  Jesus said, "I am the bread of life. They who come to me shall never hunger; they who believe in me shall never thirst." These are the gift of God for the people of God. Distribution of the Communion Elements

Bearing and Following the WORD into the World Holy Communion Prayer after Communion God of glory, you nourish us with bread from heaven. Fill us with your Holy Spirit, that through us your light may shine into all the world. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Bearing and Following the WORD into the World Deacons’ Benevolence Offering

Sending Hymn # 326 “For All The Saints” For all the saints who from their labors rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest. Alleluia! Alleluia!

Sending Hymn # 326 “For All The Saints” O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle; they in glory shine; yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia! Alleluia!

Sending Hymn # 326 “For All The Saints” From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Alleluia! Alleluia!

Bearing and Following the WORD into the World The Charge and Benediction

Bearing and Following the WORD into the World Benediction Response #540 “Farewell, Good Friends” Farewell good friends! Farewell, good friends! Shalom, Shalom! Till we meet again, till we meet again, shalom, shalom.
