Process Analysis

Process Analysis Instructions: How to do something. Directions for using appliance; How to make UN more effective More than list of steps Provide detailed justification for individual steps or for plan as a whole Explanation: How something is or was done. Might explain stages of a wide variety of operations or actions, mental or evolutionary processes (How stress affects judgment, how volcanoes cause mudslides….) Explain things readers want or need to know Appeal to curiosity or imagination

Why Use Process Analysis? Generally responds to a need for information and understanding. Need may be immediate, practical or helpful; may be a matter of curiosity or desire for understanding. Can be used to amuse or criticize.

Strategies Instructions: Explanation: Announce purpose Establish need for step-by-step explanation of the process Indicate materials needed Organize into simple, chronological steps or stages Explanation: Appeal to readers’ curiosity or desire for understanding Provide practical need for the knowledge Identify various stages or components; create organization that presents them in an easy-to-follow, logical order
