Yesterday we… Talked about different types of business letters Talked about the purpose of a Letter of Introduction Learned the basic structure of a letter of introduction Began writing our own letters of introduction

Objectives for Today Students will review and demonstrate their understanding of the writing process and proficiency in edition and revision. They will read and edit letters of introduction written by their peers, checking for adherence to assignment requirements, and standard writing conventions. They will offer constructive notes to the writer to assist in the revision of the letter. Students will review their own work and revise. TEKS: E4.13(C, D, E), 15(B)(ii, v), 17(B), 18, 19; 116(c)(1)(A, E, F), (4)(G), (6)(A, B, D); ELPS: c5C, E, F, G

The Basics: Checking your current knowledge & skills… Editing & Revising Our Letters of Introduction Editing: reviewing a written work in preparation for publication; correcting, condensing, or modifying its content Revising: reread work previously written and making alterations in response to editing

The basics: Checking your current knowledge & skills… Editing Other Students’ Letters of Introduction 1. Read the entire letter 1 time before you begin editing it. 2. First, check to be sure that the letter included all of the required information (if any information is missing, make a note of it on the paper): a. Date b. Appropriate salutation c. Simple introduction: name, age, name of this class d. Second paragraph: do you like school or not and why, other activities, plans after graduation e. Conclusion including contact information (school email only) f. Complimentary closing 3. Check for correct grammar, capitalization, punctuation, spelling. If you find a mistake, use the correct editing mark (if you know them), or just circle the mistake and make a note of it. 4. Make a general note to the writer about their letter giving suggestions for possible changes. Make sure that your notes are HELPFUL and not hurtful. Be positive. Don’t only focus on mistakes. Tell the writer what he/she did well. Be sure to sign your name so that the writer knows who edited the letter.

The basics: Checking your current knowledge & skills… Revising Our Letters of Introduction After They’re Edited 1. Read the editor’s notes 2. Ask the editor questions about the notes if necessary 3. Rewrite your letter on a fresh sheet of paper making the revisions 4. Read your letter once more carefully, checking for other mistakes 5. Turn your letter in

The basics: Checking your current knowledge & skills… Questions? Remember, this assignment is only to check your current knowledge. Your grade will be based only on how carefully you followed instructions. However, I do expect you to do your best on the assignment.
