OVERVIEW Mission, Vision, Values Purpose and Intent Accreditation Requirements (best practices) Review, Validate and/or Recommend Changes (Group Work) Evidence input Report Out

MISSION Question Does AHC currently have a mission statement? Yes No, we never have No, not any more Not sure. Please do not ask me

MISSION STATEMENT Allan Hancock College provides quality educational opportunities that enhance student learning and the creative, intellectual, cultural, and economic vitality of our diverse community.

Why have a Mission Statement? Why do colleges have mission statements? Informs the public of the college purpose and focus Organizes planning and resource allocation Required for accreditation All of the above None of the above

Mission Statement Purpose A Mission Statement defines the organization's purpose and primary objectives. Its prime function is to define the key measure or measures of the organization's success.

Mission Support Statements Vision Allan Hancock College will be the recognized leader in student success through excellence in teaching, learning, and services in an environment of mutual respect. Shared Values Student Success Innovation Mutual Respect Lifelong Learning Diversity Academic Freedom Shared Governance Excellence

Vision Purpose and Intent What is a vision statement? A statement of who we want to be A statement of how we would like to develop the College Vision Statements also define the organization’s purpose, but they do so in terms of the organization's values rather than bottom line measures (values are guiding beliefs about how things should be done.)

Community College Missions in the 21st Century, Jossey-Bass Is the societal mission of a community college to provide postsecondary education to students who might not otherwise obtain it, or to be responsive to the needs of local communities, including business and industry? Should its dominant functional mission be to provide transfer education so that students can eventually attain a baccalaureate, or should the institution concentrate on workforce training and continuing education? Given demographic shifts and pressures to be accountable and demonstrate student learning, are the traditional community college missions still relevant?

Education Code Mission (1) The California Community Colleges shall, as a primary mission, offer academic and vocational instruction at the lower division level for both younger and older students, including those persons returning to school. Public community colleges shall offer instruction through but not beyond the second year of college. These institutions may grant the associate in arts and the associate in science degree. (2) In addition to the primary mission of academic and vocational instruction, the community colleges shall offer instruction and courses to achieve all of the following: (A) The provision of remedial instruction for those in need of it and, in conjunction with the school districts, instruction in English as a second language, adult noncredit instruction, and support services which help students succeed at the postsecondary level are reaffirmed and supported as essential and important functions of the community colleges. (B) The provision of adult noncredit education curricula in areas defined as being in the state's interest is an essential and important function of the community colleges. (C) The provision of community services courses and programs is an authorized function of the community colleges so long as their provision is compatible with an institution's ability to meet its obligations in its primary missions. (3) A primary mission of the California Community Colleges is to advance California's economic growth and global competitiveness through education, training, and services that contribute to continuous work force improvement.

ACCJC: INSTITUTIONAL MISSION (current) The statement of mission defines broad educational purposes, intended student population, and commitment to achieving student learning. The institution establishes student learning programs and services aligned with its purposes, its character, and its student population The mission is approved by the governing board Using the institution’s governance and decision-making processes, the institution reviews its mission on a regular basis and revises it as necessary The institution’s mission is central to institutional planning and decision making

ACCJC: INSTITUTIONAL MISSION (working draft) Added substandard: The institution determines, using data, how effectively it is accomplishing its mission, and whether the mission reflects institutional priorities and educational needs of students Modified language: The mission guides institutional decision-making, planning and resource allocation, and informs institutional goals for student learning and achievement.

Where else is the mission identified in accreditation? The institution plans for and provides all personnel with appropriate opportunities for continued professional development, consistent with the institutional mission and based on identified teaching and learning needs. The institution has a stable and sufficient number of administrators with appropriate preparation and expertise to provide continuity and effective administrative leadership and services that support the institution’s mission and purposes.

Group Work 1. Review Mission, Vision, and Value Statements Are these statements accurate and relevant for AHC? Is there anything missing? Does the mission statement address the criteria: The institution has a statement of mission that defines the institution’s broad educational purposes, its intended student population, and its commitment to achieving student learning 2. Respond to evidence questions (see handout) 3. Report out
