Who Killed Lord Mortimer? A Mathematical Murder Mystery

A murder has been committed at Castle Pentagon! (GASP!)

Lord Winston Mortimer’s body was found in the Main Hallway of the Castle at 7:00 p.m. on October 31st.

YOU are these Mathematicians! The detectives at Scotland Yard have short-listed 6 prime suspects and are now seeking the help of a team of crack Mathematicians to sort out the clues and determine who could and couldn’t have been the culprit. YOU are these Mathematicians!

1. Sort out the information. YOUR TASK: 1. Sort out the information. 2. Determine the culprit.. 3. Justify your reasoning with EVIDENCE!

Meet the Suspects:

Melissa Killjoy Suspect Melissa Killjoy had been Lord Mortimer’s accountant for 5 years. Just a week before his death, Lord Mortimer fired her because he suspected she was secretly stealing money from him.

Charlotte Mortimer Suspect Charlotte is Lord Mortimer’s 4th wife. When they wed, she signed a prenuptial agreement stating that if she leaves him, she will get nothing. If he dies, she will inherit two million dollars. The rest of the estate will go to Lord Mortimer’s son. Of course, if Charlotte is guilty, she will not inherit.

Suspect Winston Mortimer, Jr. Lord Mortimer’s son will inherit the bulk of his father’s fortune -- but only if he is innocent!

Stanley Moneybags Suspect: Stanley, a real estate developer, has offered to buy Lord’ Mortimer’s property several times, but Lord Mortimer has always declined. Stanley would like to build condos on the property. He would be able to sell them for millions of dollars.

Suspect Mrs. Hatchett Mrs. Hatchett is a wealthy neighbor of Lord Mortimer. She lives in the castle next door with her pet dog, Foo Foo. Lord Mortimer recently called the police to complain that Mrs. Hatchett has been allowing Foo Foo to use his prize rose garden as his personal “restroom.”

Malcolm Dagger Suspect Mr. Dagger has been Lord Mortimer’s best friend and business partner for 20 years. He also owns a farm near the castle. There is a rumor that the two might have had a falling out over a property dispute.

Who killed Lord Mortimer??? YOU decide!
