Speed

What is speed? Imagine that a car travels 55 miles per hour “Miles” represents distance “Hour” represents time

What is speed? Speed is the distance an object travels in a certain amount of time

Calculating Speed All you need to know is the distance traveled and the time required to travel that distance. “per” = divided by .

Calculating Speed

Examples 15 kilometer/hour A person riding a bike travels 30 kilometers in 2 hours. What is their speed? 15 kilometer/hour

Examples A car maintains a speed of 60Km/hr for 2.5 hours. How far did it travel? 150 kilometers

Examples Jessica runs 91m at a speed of 3m/s. How long did it take her to run this distance? 30.3 hours

What 2 types of speed exist? Instantaneous speed Speed at specific instance in time or a specific moment Usually over a much shorter distance

What 2 types of speed exist? Average speed For most moving objects, speed is not constant Because speed can change so much, we calculate average speed Average speed = Total distance/Total time

What is Velocity? Examples Storm tracking We need to know the speed of the storm = 25km/hr We need to know its direction = eastward Then we know its velocity = 25 km/h westward

What is Velocity? Examples Air traffic controlling We need to know the speed of the plane = 900km/hr We need to know its direction = westward Then we know its velocity = 900 km/h westward
