JOHN DILLINGER “Jackrabbit” “Public enemy No 1” “I rob banks for a living, what do you do?”

Background Born June 22, 1903 in Indianapolis, Indiana Father was a harsh man, firm in discipline Mother died before he turned 4 Was constantly in trouble with the law as a teenager for fighting and petty theft Dated his stepmom for 3 years Known for his bewildering personality (bully) Dropped out of high school and worked in a machine shop Was in the military but deserted, dishonorable discharge

Crimes Bank Robbery- Robbed 24 banks Murder Assault Assault of an officer Grand Theft Auto

Sentencing In 1924 police finally caught up to Dillinger and arrested him his convictions included: bank robbery, murder, assault, assault of an officer, grand theft auto. The police probably thought that they finally ended the notorious bank robber Yet, in 1930 Dillinger escaped from jail and was back on the streets.

Cultural References British actor Alexander Ellis portrays Dillinger in the first Dollar Baby screen adaptation of Stephen King's short story, "The Death of Jack Hamilton" 2009: Director Michael Mann's film Public Enemies

Theory I strongly believe John Dillinger falls under the differential-association theory. John Dillinger spent his whole life doing crime. In fact the older he got, the worse the crimes got. He started with petty theft, and eventually moved all the way up to bank robbery and murder. He also had influences throughout his life like his father who harshly disciplined him. Also he had influences in jail. When he was in jail, John obviously surrounded himself with criminals. He bonded with them as they would later become a part of his gang. They even taught john how to be a criminal. These were his biggest influences. If it weren’t for his most strong influences(friends/future gang members) he would not have been the famous bank robber he became later on. Which is why i put him in the differential-association theory.
