What is a Little Free Library? It is little, it is a library, and best of all, it is FREE! It is on someone’s front lawn, in a park or at the beach, in front of a business or school, really anywhere – accessible to anyone looking for a good book. It follows the motto – “take a book, leave a book” It can be officially registered by the Little Free Library organization – if so, it will have a plaque.
A Little Library History In 2009, Todd Bol built the first little free library on his front lawn in Wisconsin to honor his mom, who was a teacher. People loved it! They borrowed books, returned them, and brought new books to share with the neighbors. It became so popular, that Todd started a non-profit with the goal of having 25,000 libraries around the world – 10x the number of public libraries that Andrew Carnegie built in the 1800’s. Today, there are over 40,000 registered Little Free Libraries in all 50 states and over 70 countries. Todd Bol’s Little Free Library
