Masculinity in Act 3 Scene 1 C/L Monday 16th October 2017 Masculinity in Act 3 Scene 1 LESSON OBJECTIVE: To understand what Shakespeare is teaching his audience about masculinity in Act 3 Scene 1. LESSON OBJECTIVE: To write an exam style response today using quotations from most male characters.

5-a-day 1 Why do you think that Eric acts strangely at the beginning of the play. Stage directions like [not quite at ease] are used. 2 What type of language is Romeo using when he says that if the stars retired and her eyes replaced them, the birds would wake up all the time thinking it is morning. Top Tip: It is a type of sonnet writing typical of the Elizbaethan Era and Shakespeare mocked it in his own Sonnet 130. 3 Scrooge’s lip trembles in Stave Two when he sees himself as child. Why is Scrooge crying? What bad memory does he have as a young boy? 4 How does this quotation “towered up between me and the stars” show the power of nature? Can you remember what poem is it from too? 5 What is a simile?

How the fighting in Act 3 Scene 1 links to the Elizabethan times: The men in this play are outside whereas Juliet is stuck in the confines of her house. This reflects how wealthy women in Elizabethan Times were tutored at home (no schools for girls) Women didn’t have the vote, were unlikely to work and not allowed to go to University. Jousting was popular for fun in the Elizabethan Times. Men liked it for fun but also to show off their strength. Medical theories of the Renaissance suggest that men are “excessively hot-blooded and passionate” “the mad-blood is stirring”

Try to remember In the Elizabethan Era medical theories supported the idea that men were naturally more hot headed and passionate. Shakespeare shows us this through the hot tempers of most of the men in this play apart from WHO?

Copy the explanation below In order to impress women, men wanted to prove that they were truly men. They would do this by showing courage and honour, usually through aggression and fighting. Additionally, the Elizabethan era was a patriarchal society, meaning that men had authority and were dominant over women in all aspects. Men would want to prove they had all the power so that they could keep a strong reputation. Challenge: Who have we seen who is keen to prove their masculinity? Who has done things that might make people question his masculinity?

I wish they would all “depart” When you are done draw arrows of each quotation and explain each one. This reveals… Also it suggests… Shakespeare here is demonstrating… I wish they would all “depart” Your Task: Inside your sword find a quotation for Romeo, Mercutio and Tybalt in Act 3 Scene 1 that all show that men wanted to prove that aggression and fighting was key to their masculine reputation. Then in a different colour OR write and then highlight it, find one Benvolio quotation to show that Shakespeare uses his character to celebrate that fighting doesn’t = masculine.

How does Shakespeare present masculinity in the Act 3 Scene 1? Challenge yourself to use the keywords: Patriarchal Authority Control Aggression Reputation Dominance Threat Undermine e.g. To undermine a man’s masculinity was insulting. Start with an opening paragraph: Shakespeare uses his male characters to both highlight and challenge stereotypes of masculinity in his play. Characters like Mercutio are used strongly to highlight the Elizabethan patriarchal society whereby men used aggression and strength to impress women and to show their social standing. However, it must be clear that Shakespeare perhaps subtly celebrates men who don’t follow the expectation that they should fight through characters such as Benvolio who continually acts as peace maker. Then analyse a quotation for Mercutio, Tybalt, Romeo and Benvolio When looking at Act 3 Scene 1, Mercutio is used by Shakespeare to show that…
