Hatchet By Gary Paulsen

19/5/15 Chapter 14 TP: Description is key in any novel. Bell work: In three bullet points, summarise what happened in chapter 13.

Class Discussion What emotions does Brian experience in this chapter after accomplishing so much? What evidence is there to support what you say?

Individual Task Write a paragraph, starting with the following sentence: He knew the wolf now, as the wolf knew him, and he nodded at it, nodded and smiled. Make sure to focus on descriptive detail to help the reader visualise the scene. Appeal to the five senses to really bring the setting to life.

Swap your writing with the person sitting in front of you. Peer Assessment Swap your writing with the person sitting in front of you. Write two stars about their diary (things they did well) Write one wish (something to improve on) Remember to be specific!

20/5/15 Chapter 15 TP: Good readers gather evidence about the main character Bell work: Imagine you could ask Brian three questions. What would they be?

Chapter 15 As you are reading, write down any interesting vocabulary or words that you don’t understand at the back of your copybook.

Dictionary Skills Look up the words you wrote down as you were reading and record their meanings. If you finish, write at least THREE sentences using the words in context.

Fact File for Brian Full name of character: Physical appearance: Country he lives in: Age: Personality: Family: Relationship with his mother: Relationship with his father: Friends: One word Brian would use to describe himself: How does he react in a crisis: Strengths: Weaknesses: Challenges that he is facing:

21/5/15 Chapter 16 TP: Good readers understand different types of texts. Bell work: Write a list of all the things you know about tornados.

Discussion The two main events that happened in this chapter were the moose attack and the tornado. How did these events affect Brian? Did he handle them well?

Writing Task Imagine that the moose has been interviewed to get their side of the incident at the lake. On the sheet provided, fill out the who, what, where, when, why and how of the story, according to the moose. Write a short newspaper article about the moose attack. Remember to give it a catchy title to get the reader’s attention. A newspaper article must be written in formal style: third person narrative (he, they, an onlooker, it, etc), words written in full (it is NOT it’s), no slang words, and so on.
