Compulsory subjects in Year 10 English Maths Science Humanities Health & Physical Education Christian Education Career Education English: educates students to understand how language can empower them to explore, communicate, create and discover the world in which they live. Maths: empowers students to solve problems, to learn how to conjecture and to reason logically, to gain an appreciation of the elegance, beauty and creative nature of mathematics to represent many situations in the world around them. Science: offers students ways to explore dynamic, collaborative and creative human endeavours which arise from humankind’s desire to make sense of their world. It does this by through exploring the unknown, investigating universal mysteries, making predictions and solving problems. History: offers a disciplined process of inquiry into the past that develops students' curiosity and imagination. Historical knowledge promotes an understanding of societies, events, movements and developments that have shaped humanity from earliest times. HPE: develops understanding through and about movement, whilst helping students to make informed decisions about their health, exercise and the outdoors. CEd: Christian Education raises awareness of social and ethical issues and presents Christianity to the students in a meaningful and relevant way. Career Education: engages with changing technology, employment patterns and economic restructuring as the realities of a rapidly changing world of work that students will be entering into. Career Education will equip students with the tools to head confidently into this uncertain future.

Year 10 Students will study a combination of subjects that are aligned with the Western Australian Curriculum except in Languages which is aligned to the older Curriculum Framework. The Western Australian Curriculum for Languages is being slowly rolled out and is not likely to be implemented in WA secondary schools until 2020.

At LJBC, subjects in Lower Secondary are designed to prepare students for the Western Australian Curriculum aligned courses for Year 11 and Year 12 for the WACE in 2020/21.

Health & Physical Education Year 10 – compulsory component Physical Education is compulsory for all Year 10 students and provides the opportunity to participate in recreational activities that will lead to life-long healthy habits. Practical activities and sports are used as a medium for developing interpersonal and self-management skills.   The Health Education program aims to enable students to make ongoing healthy decisions, assess risk and have respectful relationships

Christian Education Christian Education during upper secondary years focus on the teachings of Jesus and what we can learn from his dealings with people and his reactions to a variety of circumstances. Students have the opportunity to discuss complex ethical and life issues and are introduced to different world religions and how they compare to Christianity. Social justice carries into the upper secondary years where students explore issues like and ethical trading and injustice in the world. Year 10 Christian Ed begins to apply the teachings of Jesus to our world. Different religions are introduced and compared to Christianity and students get involved in discussions on Social Justice.

Career Education Focus Year 10 Basic introduction to Careers Students understand factors that underpin career development Students will investigate career development opportunities Students understand how aspects of the changing world and technology advances impacts on career development opportunities Identify and pursue training that will lead to a career pathway that will be ‘fun’! Students will begin exploring options for their future, activities will include real life applications such as applying for their tax file number and creating a CV

Elective subjects in Year 10 Choice of three from six Learning Areas Future Problem Solvers (by invitation only) Careers Health and Physical Education Languages The Arts Technologies Note: a student cannot choose three options from the same Learning Area

Duration of an elective subject Students are expected to enrol in an elective subject for the full year Students will only be permitted to change out of an elective mid-way through the year if there are serious mitigating circumstances and only if there are available places in the alternative subject Students currently in Year 9 may change electives for Year 10 All electives prepare students for Senior Secondary subjects in Year 11 and Year 12

Health & Physical Education Electives Year 10 Physical Education Studies Provides students with the opportunity to compete and develop in sporting activities. Students will be introduced to the body’s anatomical and physiological systems. Leads to Physical Education Studies in year 11 and 12 and potential careers in sporting, fitness and medical fields.

Outdoor Education Students develop and improve their technical skills, ensure safe participation in surfing and abseiling related activities. Students demonstrate these skills on a day trip and an overnight expedition. Students are challenged to push their limits and develop their personal capabilities as well as communication and team work skills work or pursue further study in outdoor recreation related fields

Health Studies The focus for Health Studies is personal health Health Studies The focus for Health Studies is personal health. What determines a person’s level of health, factors that enable and reinforce healthy behaviours and approaches to improving health are explored. Year 10 Health Studies provides prerequisite knowledge for students wanting to work or pursue further study in health and medical related fields, e.g health promotions, nursing, physio, medicine. The course leads to Year 11 ATAR Health Studies

Future Problem Solvers by invitation from the Learning Enhancement Centre For Year 10 students, this is an international education program that focuses on the development of critical, creative and futuristic thinking skills. It challenges students to apply their imagination and thinking skills to some of the most significant issues facing the world today. Please remind parents that they should have already received a letter from the LEC if their student/child has been invited

Languages Year 10 Japanese Students will develop a better understanding of Japanese people and their culture and feel encouraged in their attempts to speak, listen, read and write in Japanese. Teenagers (Around me, School life, daily life and family relationships)  Neighbourhoods (out and about, exploring Japan and Japanese homes) The course runs for the full academic year. Students will watch Japanese films and have lunch at a Japanese restaurant mid-year. In addition, there is an opportunity to participate in a tour to Japan in Years 10, 11 and 12.

Languages Year 10 French Students will develop a deeper understanding of Francophone people and their culture and will continue to build their skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing in French. Students will watch French films and participate in excursions and incursions. In addition, there is the opportunity to participate in a tour to France in the future. The topics studied are:  The World of Youth (comprising talking about yourself, socialising with a French family, youth culture in Francophone countries, communicating in a modern world)  The Francophone World (comprising planning a trip to a French-speaking country, regions of France, daily life in a French-speaking family, our French connections)
