Different Types of Chemical Reactions

Today’s Targets: To be able to describe and identify 8 different types of Chemical Reactions.

Why Do we Care About classifying Types of Chemical Equations??? It is human nature to want to classify things. We classify music, food and ... Classifying allows us to PREDICT what will happen before the reaction occurs!

How do We Classify types of Reactions? 1. Based on energy or heat transfer during the reaction. 2. Based on how the atoms become rearranged during the reaction.

How do We Classify types of Reactions? 1. Based on energy or heat transfer during the reaction.

Classifying based on energy/heat transfer TYPE 1- EXOTHERMIC THERMIC à EXO à

Classifying based on energy/heat transfer TYPE 1- EXOTHERMIC THERMIC à HEAT EXO à OUT

Classifying based on energy/heat transfer TYPE 1- EXOTHERMIC THERMIC à HEAT EXO à OUT Exothermic means a release of heat/energy out as a product. CH4+ O2à CO2+ H20 + HEAT (methane)

Classifying based on energy/heat transfer Type 2- endothermic THERMIC à ENDO à

Classifying based on energy/heat transfer Type 2- endothermic THERMIC à HEAT ENDO à IN

Classifying based on energy/heat transfer Type 2- endothermic THERMIC à HEAT ENDO à IN Endothermic means the reaction takes in heat/energy from it’s surrounding, as a reactant. N2 + O2 + HEAT à 2 NO

Classifying reactions based on atom rearrangement Remember: REACTANTS are what we start with and PRODUCTS are what we end with 2H2 + O2 à 2H2O

Type 3- synthesis (combination) Description 2 or more reactants combine to make 1 single product General Equation A+ B à AB Specific Example 2H2 + O2 à 2H2O Analogy boy meets girl = couple Picture

Type 4- decomposition or breaking apart Description 1 Single reactant is broken down into 2 or more products General Equation A BàA+ B Specific Example 2H2Oà2H2 + O2 Analogy The couple Breaks up! Picture

Type 5- single replacement or substitution Description 1 single element replaces an element in a compound General Equation A + BCà AC+ B Specific Example Ca + MgCl2à CaCl2 + Mg Analogy Like one girl switching dance partners Picture

Type 6- double replacement Description When elements in 2 different compounds switch or change places General Equation AB + CDà AD+ CB Specific Example NaCl + KIà NaI + KCl Analogy Like 2 pairs or sets of dancers changing partners Picture

Acid + Base à Salt + Water Type 7- neutralization Description Acid + Base à Salt + Water General Equation HA + BOHà BA+ H20 Specific Example HCl + NaOHà NaCl + H2O Analogy NONE Picture HINT: Will always have OH on reactant (left) side and H20 on product (right) side

Type 8- combustion or burning Description Hydrocarbon reacts with Oxygen (O2) to produce Heat, Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Water (H2O) General Equation CxHy+ O2à CO2+ H20 Specific Example CH4+ O2à CO2+ H20 Analogy None Picture HINT: Will always have CO2+ H20 on product (right) side

Review 1) Energy or Heat based 1) Exothermic 2) Endothermic 2) Atom rearrangement 3) Synthesis (Combination) 4) Decomposition 5) Single Replacement (Substitution) 6) Double Replacement 7) Neutralization 8) Combustion ( Burning)
