Jean Piaget Jean Piaget was born in Neuchatel, Switzerland on August 9, 1896. • Published his first paper at age 10. • Attended University of Neuchatel, where he graduated at age 22 with a PhD in Natural Science.

His mother Rebecca Jackson, was intelligent and energetic but Jean found her a bit neurotic-- an impression that he said led to his interest in psychology but away from pathology.

Four Stages of Cognitive Development are : 1. Sensory motor (age birth – 2) 2. Preoperational (age 2-6/7) 3. Concrete Operational (age 6/7-11/12) 4. Formal Operational. (age 11-12+)

Sigmund Freud Sigmund Freud was born on May 6, 1856 in a small town—Freiberg– in Moravia. He died in 1939, after becoming one of the most influential people in the study of psychology.

A brilliant child always at the head of his class; he went to medical school one of few viable options for a bright Jewish boy in Vienna those days.

Freud emigrated to England just before World War II when Vienna became an increasingly dangerous place for Jews especially ones as famous as Freud.

Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) is universally considered the ‘‘father’’ of psychoanalysis, and many date the birth of psychoanalytic theory from the 1899 publication of The Interpretation of Dreams (copyright 1900).

William James William James was born in New York City on January 11, 1842, to an affluent, cosmopolitan and deeply religious family. 1910 - Died August 26, at the age of 68.

In 1857, he was appointed dozen (instructor) at Heidelberg, where he lectured on physiology. From 1858 to 1864, he also served as an assistant to the famous physiologist Helmholtz, and studied the neurological and chemical stimulation of muscles.

As the family money began to dwindle, William realized he would need to support himself and switched to Harvard Medical School. Unhappy with medicine as well, he left on an expedition with naturalist Louis Agassiz, although the experience was not a happy one.

He was a founder of the American Society for Psychical Research, as well as a champion of alternative approaches to healing.
