Purpose The purpose of this Pre Start training is to:- Develop knowledge and skills to assist operations staff in conducting daily Pre Start meetings Give a clear understanding of:- What is a Pre Start meeting? Why they are important? Locate resources required to assist with a Pre Start meeting

Context Pre Start meetings are being conducted on all sites on a daily basis Pre Start meetings are not always lead by the Village Manager Pre Start meetings are currently only covering safety issues and not operational items Drug and Alcohol testing is not always carried out prior to the Pre Start meeting Pre Start meetings are being minuted and records kept on site Pre Start meetings are a vital opportunity to start our shifts well

What topics should be discussed? When should we have a Pre Start? What/Why/When/Who? What topics should be discussed? Safety and general operational issues for the day What happened yesterday? What is going to happen today? Why have a Pre Start? Drive safety and productivity of our work groups Enhance staff engagement via communication and “buy in” When should we have a Pre Start? Every day Allow 10 – 15 minutes for the Pre start meeting Who should conduct a Pre Start meeting? Village Manager or next senior line leader 5

What is a Pre Start Meeting? Pre Start meetings are an essential daily tool developed to focus employees on the day’s tasks and to inform them of operational and safety issues. As best practice, alcohol breath testing should be conducted prior to the meeting. If required, this can be conducted during the meeting, but should be completed before the end of the Pre Start. Pre-Start Meetings allows leaders and employees to:- Record daily drug and alcohol tests Track the progress of daily operations and site changes Identify clashing timetables for scheduled work or training Monitor and communicate potential site hazards and safety issues They are not just a safety “tick and flick” meeting

Why is a Pre Start Meeting important? Pre Start meetings are an opportunity for the leader to ensure:- all tasks or activities for that day are not outside the normal scope of duties the necessary Safe Work Instructions and JHAs are in place all employees are aware of what is happening on site for that day, for all work groups all employees are aware of any visitors attending or training being undertaken sharing of hazards, near misses or recent incidents general concerns/issues from yesterday To start the shift well and deliver on great service to our client

What makes a good Pre Start Meeting? The participants are involved and engaged Covers not only what happened yesterday – but what is happening today Covers operational issues for the day Runs on time and contains only the important information Is structured, minuted and planned for 8

Agenda Use a set agenda for each meeting with standard questions/items to cover each day that will formalise the process and keep you on track Keep on time – defer lengthy discussions for a separate meeting or toolbox talk Safety Items Answers to actionable items/questions from previous meetings 5 mins Operational Issues News for the Day Concerns/Issues 10 mins Questions/Feedback 15 mins 9
