Warm-Up: Identify the claim and evidence. State if the evidence is sufficient to support the claim. “Certain countries are unwilling or unable to help climate refugees. The United Nations group of countries cannot agree to support the refugees. The United States is not accepting many refugees, period. Australia does not want to have to pay for their support if they move to their country. And China would rather continue to grow their businesses than take blame for their hand in climate change leading to refugees.”

CLIMATE REFUGEE

S.O.S. Summary “Climate Change is a real problem. It affects many countries around the world. We have a responsibility to help reduce those effects.” Agree or Disagree? Provide at least 3 pieces of evidence to support your opinion.

Debate Scenario You are representing one of the countries mentioned in the film at the next meeting of the United Nations. United States, Tuvalu, Bangladesh, Australia, China, Africa The topic of the meeting is to discuss: 1. How is climate change affecting your area in the world? 2. Should others accept the term “climate refugee”? 3. Should larger countries who started carbon pollution the most (like the United States) be paying for the damages caused by climate change? 4. Are there any other solutions that could help? The final solution decided on was: ________________ 5. Did everyone like the solution? What problems might you have in getting all countries to agree and follow the solution decided on? How will you tackle these problems?

Practice your Writing! The documentary opens with a claim that says that Climate Change is the biggest threat to our national security. Explain what this quote means, why the speaker would feel that way, and how much you agree with the statement. *Organize your thoughts! (Intro, 3 Body, Conclusion)
