Why is the federal government divided into 3 branches? http://curriculum.lexingtonma.org/BranchesOfGovtQuest/Branches.gif

As a way to prevent one branch from having too much power and because it creates a system of checks and balances. http://www.cyberlearning-world.com/lessons/checks.and.balances.chart.jpg

How does the system of checks and balances work?

That way no one branch can overpower any other. Each branch has the power to check or halt the power of the other branch. That way no one branch can overpower any other. http://www.cyberlearning-world.com/lessons/checks.and.balances.chart.jpg

Give an example of the system of checks and balances.

Congress makes laws that the President has the right to pass or refuse to pass. The Supreme Court has the right to declare a law unconstitutional. The President is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces but only Congress can declare war.

Democracy is a form of government in which the power is held by the people. A democratic government is important because then the citizens will have a voice in what is happening in their country.

What is its purpose and goal of the Bill of Rights?

Why did the writers of the Bill of Rights feel it was important to protect basic freedoms like your right to be free, right to believe what you wish, right to own things?

Our Founding Fathers felt that everyone had basic rights they called natural rights. The Bill or Rights protects these rights to life, liberty, and property. http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/treasures/images/at0058a.5s.jpg

In order for us to have rights as citizens, we must be responsible for our part in keeping our country going. List 3 ways you can be a responsible citizen.
