Analysis notes Ateya generally agrees with Bok’s argument about freedom of speech in spite of problems that this freedom creates. Critiques-Where Bok’s rhetoric is (in)effective: Uses tact and diplomacy in arg style, so as not to alienate readers Weak on the surface, but might work (flexible) General enough (adaptable) Needs more facts to persuade reader Interviews w/ students would have been more effective evidence Critiques-Where Ateya’s rhetoric is (in)effective Meet tests (????)-More info needed to understand this Personal statement effective b/c it gives her credibility (ethos) and shows emotional connection (pathos) (legitimizes, need to speak, Personal confirms the writer’s argument by showing agreement (shows own position/possibility creates bias) Showing position also keeps arg open for more discussion for reasonable people to disagree on (key component in academic argument)
