Mr. Kim’s Background I’m a mom too! B.A. in English from Rutgers University M.A. in Teaching from The College of New Jersey This is my eleventh year of teaching at MHS. I have taught all grades here. This is my second year teaching Seniors, and I LOVE IT!!!

Expectations Complete assignments fully, to the best of your ability, and on time Come prepared to class with a binder, pen, pencil, paper and the book we’re reading Personal integrity is key on all assignments Do your best and have fun!

Things to remember 3 lates equal a teacher detention. 6 lates equal an office referral. Any plagiarism will result in a zero for the assignment and school disciplinary action Grades throughout senior year are reported to college, so encourage your children to keep working all year long!

Unit 1: Family Dynamics Essential Questions: Overarching Essential Questions How strong are family ties? What brings a family together? What pushes families apart? How do family dynamics affect politics? What sacrifices are made for family members? In what ways are tragic heroes isolated from their families? Can one have all the right information and yet make the wrong decisions? ​ Topical Essential Questions How are family structures different? What roles are stereotypical for each family member? Enduring Understandings: Family relationships can be complicated. Family members have the ability to hurt each other the most. Pride can hurt families.

Unit 2: Siblings Essential Questions: How might sibling relationships influence our identity? Does birth order play a role in the development of one's personality? How might sibling relationships have a positive and/or negative impact on one's self concept? Enduring Understandings: Sibling relationships can have a significant impact on who we become Birth order can play a role in personality development Friendships can develop into sibling relationships People define "Family" in different ways

Unit 3: The Mother/Father Figure Essential Questions: Is it critical for one to have a "Mother figure," biological or non- biological, in ones life? Is it critical for one to have a "Father figure," biological or non- biological in one's life? Are the stories of our mothers and fathers part of us? Do help make us who we are? Who do we consider our "parents"? Do parents care for all their children in the same way? What defines a "parent?" When do children take on parental roles? How much do parents influence our perceptions of life? Enduring Understandings: Those who raise us are not always our biological parents. Not all parents are loving and supportive. Parents show their love in unexpected ways. Families are defined in many different ways.
