Welcome to Class of Self-Improvement 28-Dec-18

Path (Carita, FCA career advisor) A Log Book you use to keep a record of what you do, how you study, what you learn as well as feelings, mood, thoughts, misunderstandings, confusions, wonderings, surprises…

Tool A helpful tool to guide you in your studies and to raise your awareness of your learning process. A Dialogue between you and the content of the course A continuous self-reflection of your learning and understanding

Why Learning Diary? It makes your learning process more open, transparent and understandable. To yourself To other participants To the teachers/facilitators

1.Some Advice to keep an LD Keep the learning diary regularly during the whole course. At least once a week make your comments and reflections. Include pictures, figures, mind maps, news, - anything that helps in your learning process. Include examples from your daily work.

Some Advice to keep an LD (Conted) The learning diary is private but be ready to share some of your ideas, reflections and experiences with other participants in the next contact days. You’ll bring a short report of your learning process to the teacher/facilitator (more detailed and personal). Prepare also a short presentation to other participants (more general). Useful Questions for writing an LD (Sari, Education Specialist to FCA): What did I learn? What was new to me? What was important and relevant to me? How were the issues connected to my previous knowledge? Was there something that changed my views and why? What remained unclear? How am I able to apply this knowledge in my work? What was the most important notion/thing? Why?

In the journal extracts, the writer have 2. Additional Information: WRITING A JOURNAL karsrrsrkMNt;ehtuRbcaMéf¶ A lot of language learners find it helpful to keep a journal in which they write down what they feel about their lessons and their language learning experiences. They use what they have written as a basis for discussion with their teachers. Do you think this would be useful for you and/or your teacher? In the journal extracts, the writer have Described what happened (Verb tenses) Given reasons for their feelings (Because..) Described their feelings (Adjective..ed/ing) Made suggestions (I think we should…I’d like to…Why don’t we….)

Other suggestions for writing a journal (p.16: ILona Leki) Get a binder to store all your entries. Begin each entry on a new sheet of paper. Date each entry. Write in a place (no interruption). Relax and let your mind empty itself. Once writing, keep writing continuously for 15’. Write legibly and leave plenty of space for comments. Use the suggestions given. After 15’, go back and reread what you wrote. Do this three times each week and keep all your entries. Note that journal writing includes observations about life around you, about yourself and others. Descriptions of significant events , insights, memories, thoughts and opinions.

Question: ask a person about something The PQ4R Method - Earliest system called SQ3R: Survey, Question, Read, Recite and Review - A more recently developed system called: PQ4R: Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite and Review Preview: display (a product, film, etc.) before it is made generally available Question: ask a person about something Read: look at words or symbols and understand what they mean Reflect: think carefully, especially about possibilities and opinions Recite: say a piece of writing aloud from memory, or to publicly state a list of things Review: look over, study or examine again
