Bell Work! Timmy used litmus paper to test an unknown substance. He could tell that the substance was a clear liquid and it seemed to be bubbling. He also knew that he had seen it before so it must be something pretty familiar. When he used the indicator during his test, he saw that the red litmus paper turned blue. His lab partner predicted that the unknown substance was Sprite (because of the clear fizzing). Timmy disagreed…but why?

The pH Scale Chapter 14
Strengths of Acids and Bases Acids and bases can be strong or weak. Strength vs. Concentration + = NEUTRAL ACID BASE
Strong vs. Weak Acids: STRONG ACID—all the molecules break apart and produce H+ ions H+ H+ H+ H+ H+ H+ H+ H+ H+ H+ H+ H+ H+ H+ H+ H+ H+ H+ H+ H+ H+ WEAK ACID—a few molecules break apart and form H+ ions
Examples of Acids: STRONG: sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid WEAK: acetic acid, citric acid, carbonic acid
Strong vs. Weak Bases: STRONG BASE—all the molecules break apart and produce OH- ions WEAK BASE—few of the molecules break apart and form OH- ions
The pH Scale: The pH of a solution is a measure of the hydronium ion concentration in the solution. (Or how many H+ there are…) Remember! Acid = less than 7 Neutral = 7 Base = more than 7
