What is Biology?

Course Layout Continued: Invertebrates (Chapters 26-29) Chordates (Chapters 30-33) Animal Behavior (Chapter 34) Body Systems (Chapter 35-40) Special Topics Material will be a combination of lecture, audiovisual, lab work, and inquiry activities.

Materials 1 ½ binder recommended College ruled paper Dividers Index cards (flash cards) recommended. Color pencils/pens for labeling. Use agenda to keep up with assignments. Scientific calculator or higher.

Rules Share your ideas and your questions, but be courteous to those around you. Follow all rules in the student handbook. Be in your seat and ready to work when the tardy bell rings. Absolutely no food, drinks, candy, or gum in the classroom at any time. All subjects will be covered according to the South Carolina Standards. I will be happy to provide you with a copy if you would like one.

Rules continued: No talking while lecture is in progress. If you have any questions; please raise your hand. No electronic devices (cell phones, mp3 players, etc…) Rules may be changed/adjusted as necessary.

Consequences: 1st Offense: Warning 2nd Offense: Parent contact and possible detention. 3rd Offense: Detention 4th Offense: Referral to Administrator Detention must be served at the convenience of the instructor or during break.

Consequences Phone calls to parents will be made on an individual basis as needed. Immediate referrals will be written for the following: cheating/plagiarism (also a zero) and blatant disrespect.

Grading Policy Tests = 40% Labs/Quizzes = 25% Class work = 20% Homework/Current Event = 15% Grading Policy A 93 - 100 B 85 - 92 C 77 - 84 D 70 - 76 F 69 and below

Grading Policy continued: Tests will be given at the end of each chapter. There will also be one notebook test per nine weeks. Quizzes will be given every day. At the end of each week a total score will be calculated and one quiz grade will be given.

Grading Policy continued: Major labs/projects may be counted as a test grade. Student will be given plenty of advance notice prior to these labs/projects

Class work When you complete class work before we go on to the next assignment/activity or before the bell rings, you may read a scientific magazine, read over your notes, begin your homework, or work on an ongoing project. You may NOT do work for other classes. Any class work not completed in class and isn’t taken up is automatically homework.

Notebook Organization (Lab Grade) Each nine weeks your notebook will be graded and counts as a lab grade. Your Notebook should contain: syllabus, the notes for that nine week period, all class work, homework, and other handouts, labs (list of the lab name and grade if it was a group lab and you didn’t get the original copy back), quizzes. Tests will be taken back up once you have looked over the results.

Notebook continued: The notebook should be neat and organized (no papers falling out or stuffed randomly in pockets). Extra points may be awarded to a student who shows exemplary organization skills.

Labs You are required to participate in labs. If you miss a lab you are required to make the lab up. This will be done at the instructor’s convenience. Some labs may count as a test grade. Advance Notice will be given.

Late Work: As a general rule, Late work is not accepted, since assignments are often discussed the following day in class. Students should speak with me about any work they may have missed during an absence. Generally, a student will have two weeks from the date of the original assignment to make the assignment up. Alternative assignments may have to be given.
