Raider Virtual Academy 101 RVA Program Introduction This PowerPoint is designed to help Parents understand what is expected of there students at the RVA

Purpose of RVA for Parents Guide the parents of RVA students through the RVA program. Provide a basis for home support for students The purpose of this presentation is to guide parents through the RVA program in hopes that they can in turn provide additional help for their students at home.

Mission of RVA Provide a high quality education for high school students which prepares students for post high school educational pathways. Our mission at the RVA is to provide a high quality high school education. We offer an alternate path to a high school diploma for students who are not comfortable in a traditional high school environment.

RVA Blended Learning Program Complete work online Physically attend for support and guidance RVA is what is referred to as a “blended learning program.” This means the students will be required to complete work at the RVA lab as well as at home. It is important to understand that the students will be required to attend the RVA every week in an addition to hours they will be logging in at home. People often mistake this for an online learning program where students complete all of their work online with no physical attendance requirement.

Program Expectations Students are expected to: Physically attend lab 16 Hours per week Work productively 30 Hours per week Complete 4-8 activities per hour Initially students will be required to attend the lab every hour we are open. Currently, our hours are Monday through Thursday from 3:15-7:15. This introductory period the students will begin taking their first class “Strategies for Academic Success” a study skills course. This course will give the knowledge of how to learn, taking notes, study strategies, etc. When the students complete the Strategies course, we will open 2 additional classes. In addition to the 16 lab hours per week, the students should also work productively outside of the lab for an additional 14 hours for a total lag in of 30 hours per actively working on the classes. This is comparable to the 30 hours per week that a student would attend a traditional school. While working the students should be completing 4-8 activities per hour. If a student is not completing 4-8 activities per hour he or she will need to work over the 30 hour minimum required, in order to complete courses on schedule. This would be comparable to homework done by a traditional student.

Advanced RVA Attendance After the student has established consistent work habits Reduced in lab attendance 30 hours online attendance Complete 4-8 activities per hour After the students have completed the orientation period and established good work habits in and out of the lab, they will have reduced lab requirements. The least hours required will be 4 hours per week. However, the student is still required to complete 4 to 8 activities per hour for 30 total hours of online attendance. If a student drops below 30 hours per week of online engagement, he or she will again be required to attend the lab for 16 hours per week.

Behavior Expectations Respect all staff and students and property Dress appropriately Use appropriate language Avoid controlled substances Do not wander the building We do have behavior expectations outlined on our expectations contract the students sign. As you would expect, they include common school behavior expectations such as respecting staff and students, dressing appropriately, using appropriate language, avoiding controlled substances, do not disturb other students, etc.

Raider Virtual Academy RVA for Parents Part II Edgenuity This section focus’s on Edgenuity, the educational program used by the RVA.

Introductory Video Automatically opens when student logs in for the first time to explain: Lobby Course structure Communication tools Organizer To view Introductory video click here When the student first logs into the program an introductory video will open which explains the program an how to get the most out of it. The Lobby is where the student can navigate between courses.

Vocabulary Type in word Listen to definition Course Structure The typical course is divided into topics and topics into units. Each unit opens with vocabulary. The student types in the word and the definition and this will be available in the notes section.

Lecture Video 15-40 minutes 2 video windows open at the same time Teacher Speaking Visual content Can not fast forward through content until after it has been seen at regular speed Next a lecture video will open displaying a teacher speaking and an additional screen with visual content. The student cannot skip the video, or can he or she fast forward through content. After a section has played the student has full rewind and fast forward capabilities so that he or she can review content. During the lecture video, students are expected to take notes using the e-notes tool. These notes are available for reference while the students are taking quizzes and tests.

Journal A question requiring student to demonstrate understanding of subject. Graded based on use of keywords Each unit also has a journal question requiring the student to demonstrate understanding of the subject.

Multiple choice True and False Short answer Short Essay Practice/ Homework Multiple choice True and False Short answer Short Essay Each unit has an assignment prior to the Quiz. I some classes it is referred to as homework while in others it is referred to as practice. The students often try to breeze through these without effort. If they do not pass their quizzes they will be required to complete this again before they receive a reset.

Quizzes Topic Tests Cumulative Assessments Each unit ends with a quiz. Topics end with a Topic Test. Cumulative exams assess the learning for the whole class. The cumulative exam is also referred to as the final exam.

Other features Essays Project Vocabulary interactive English courses do require students to write essays which are graded by Mrs. Long. Some courses such as digital arts have projects which are also graded by the appropriate teacher.

Raider Virtual Academy for parents Part III How can you help At this point, I know you all must be wondering how you can help your student to be successful. The last part of the presentation will attempt to help answer that question.

Keep track of student progress Motivate Transportation How Can you help? Keep track of student progress Motivate Transportation The two biggest things you can do to help your student are keeping track of his or her progress and help keep him or her motivated. Also, you can make sure your child has a way to get here. Ask student what he or she has done. Ask student what he or she has learned. Ask student about his or her goals.

Family Portal Allows you to keep track of Student grades Student progress Student log in times To keep track of your students progress you need to utilize the Parent Portal. This will allow you to keep track of your students grades, progress and log-in time.

Progress reports Can be sent daily weekly or monthly Color-codes: • Red: the student is falling behind in their course • Blue: the student is on track with their course • Green: the student is ahead of schedule in their course The portal will email you progress reports daily, weekly or monthly. We usually set them up as weekly reports. Color codes help you understand whether or not your child is on track for completion. Red indicates the student is falling behind. Blue indicates the student is on track. Green indicates the student is working ahead of schedule. Obviously, we are hoping for green but content with blue.

Grades Overall Grade: current percentage based on work completed Relative Grade: Points received compared to the total points in the course. Actual Grade: based on the overall grade in relation to the percentage of coursework completed vs. the percentage of coursework that should have been completed. Entire course must be completed to receive grade. The report also offers three grades, overall, relative, and actual. The overall grade is the average the student has received on the work he or she has completed so far. The Relative Grade assumes that the student will receive zeros for any incomplete activities/assessments. This is a good way to figure out what the student’s grade would be if they stopped working in the class today and completed no more activities or assessments The Actual Grade is based on the overall grade in relation to the percentage of coursework completed vs. the percentage of coursework that should have been completed. If a student is on-track or ahead of schedule with their course, the Actual Grade will be the same as the Overall Grade. Only when the student is falling behind in completing their coursework will the Actual Grade be lower than the Overall Grade. If no Start Date or Target date have been set for the course, the Actual Grade will not populate and will instead show N/A.

Maintaining Student Motivation Keep track of time Create high expectations Ask for feedback “What have you learned?” “Are you confused about anything?” “How can I help?” Additionally, you can keep track of time. Communicate high expectations for your children will let them know that you believe in them. Finally, make sure you ask them questions everyday such as “What have you learned?” “Are you confused about anything?” “How can I help?”
