Section 6-3 Multi Step Equations To write and solve multi step equations

Two Goals The goal in solving a Multi-step equation is to have only variables on one side of the equal sign and numbers on the other side of the equal sign. The other goal is to have the number in front of the variable (aka coefficient) equal to a positive one. 7n = -7 n = -1

3n + 9 + 4n = 2 7n + 9 = 2 7n + 9 = 2 -9 -9 7n = -7 / 7 / 7 *7 -9 Step 1 => Combine Like Terms 7n + 9 = 2 Step 2 => Use Do/Undo to solve the variable Do Undo 7n + 9 = 2 -9 -9 7n = -7 / 7 / 7 *7 -9 n = -1 / 7 +9

4 ( m + 3) = - 32 Step 1 => Use Distributive Property 4m + 12 = - 32 Step 2 => Use Do/Undo to solve the variable 4m + 12 = - 32 -12 -12 4m = - 44 / 4 / 4 Do Undo m = - 11 * 4 -12 +12 / 4

15 = -3(c-1) + 9 15 = -3c + 3 + 9 15 = -3c + 12 -12 -12 /-3 /-3 *-3 Step 1 => Use Distributive Property 15 = -3c + 3 + 9 Step 2 => Combine Like Terms 15 = -3c + 12 Step 3 => Use Do/Undo to solve the variable 15 = -3c + 12 -12 -12 Do Undo 3 = -3c /-3 /-3 *-3 -12 /-3 +12 -1 = c rewrite as c=-1

1.5 – 0.25(a + 4) = 3 + 3(0.05 – 0.5a) Step 1 => Use Distributive Property 1.5 – 0.25a - 1 = 3 + .15 – 1.5a Step 2 => Combine Like Terms .5 – 0.25a = 3.15 – 1.5a Step 3 => Get variables on one side (make sure the variable is positive) .5 – 0.25a + 1.5a = 3.15 – 1.5a + 1.5a .5 + 1.25a = 3.15

Step 3 => Get variables on one side Step 4 => Use Do/Undo to solve the variable .5 + 1.25a = 3.15 Do Undo - 0.5 - 0.5 * 1.25 - 0.5 1.25a = 2.65 + 0.5 / 1.25 / 1.25 / 1.25 a = 2.12
