ENTEROBACTERIACEAE: Proteus, Providencia, Morganella Lecture 10 Prepared by: Miss Norzawani Jaffar Bsc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences, UKM

Learning Outcomes At the end of learning process student must be able to; Describe characteristic of Enterobactericeae (Proteus, Providencia, Morganella) Describe the important features for Proteus, Providencia, Morganella Understand the role in disease for Proteus, Providencia, Morganella Explain the significant laboratory diagnosis for Proteus, Providencia, Morganella identification.

Proteus, Providencia, Morganella Common characteristics .

Features of importance are; Urease which splits urea in urine, raises urine pH and encourages renal stone formation. Pili may assist both attachment and phagocytosis. Flagellar action may assist spread. * Laboratory identification depends on Gram stain, culture and biochemical tests.

Proteus vulgaris

Providencia alcalifaciens

Sites of colonization and extraintestinal disease production by the coliforms and Proteus.

Identification of enteric bacteria
