Creating a CV

Learning objective To understand the key components that need to be included in a successful application. To be able to successfully complete a CV.

What are the reasons for writing a CV? To apply for an advertised job To apply ‘speculatively’ to a potential employer To list your skills and experience

What information goes on a CV? Personal details Career aims/personal statement Key skills Education and qualifications Employment/work experience Hobbies and interests References

What job would you like to have in the future? What work experience do you have? What are your interests? (What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?) What qualifications do you have? What are your achievements? List 3 words to describe your personality.

Job advert Have a look at the job advert in front of you. Use one highlighter to highlight the skills you believe you already possess. Use the other highlighter to identify skills you need to work on.

Writing your own CV Now it is time to write your own CV. Your CV needs to include the following information: Personal details - Your full name and date of birth Career aims/personal statement - What would you like to do in the future/What would you like to achieve? Key skills - What skills do you possess that are relevant to the job you are applying for? Education and qualifications - Your school grades. If you haven’t yet finished your GCSEs you can put your target grades in. Employment/work experience - Information about any jobs or voluntary work you have done including your responsibilities as well as the skills you developed. Hobbies, interests & achievements - What you enjoy doing in your spare time. Any qualifications you have gained aside of your schools ones, e.g. Duke of Edinburgh. Referees - The name and contact details of two people who would be willing to provide positive and constructive information about you.
