Colons

Learning Intentions I understand the three main uses of colons. I can use a colon in a sentence.

The colon wants you to pay attention to what comes next. It looks like this: : The colon wants you to pay attention to what comes next. The colon introduces things: lists, quotations or another part of the sentence that explains the first part.

The colon is like a herald (a little person with a trumpet) announcing whatever comes after it. Think of those two dots as the “Toot! Toot!” of the trumpet to announce what comes next.

The colon is an interesting piece of punctuation that can add variety to your writing. 1. The colon can introduce a list. We took lots of equipment on our expedition: tents, sleeping bags, torches, pans, tinned food, etc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I12qwxQn5_s

Complete sentence: list of items Rule Complete sentence: list of items

2. The colon can introduce an example/s. There are two things I will not eat: peanut butter and apricots.

3. The colon can introduce an explanation of the statement made in the first part of the sentence. You could hardly call it a car: the doors had fallen off, there was no bonnet and in place of a roof there was a large umbrella.

Write out the following sentences, adding a colon in the correct place Dragon vomit is weird it contains cushions, half chewed princesses and hundreds of pointy shoes. It was Ewan’s favourite meal pizza and kebab. Her last words to me were simple I forgive you. There were clear reasons for his success his hard work and determination to do better than his parents.
