Technological World – CH 12 Manufacturing Technical Objects Mechanical Properties

Mechanical Properties Mechanical properties of a material describe how it reacts when subjected to one or more constraints What happens to an object? We will discuss: Hardness Elasticity Resilience Ductility Malleability Stiffness

Hardness Ability to resist indentation or abrasion (scratches) Examples: Porcelain tiles Scratch covers

Elasticity Ability to return to their original shapes after undergoing a constraint Examples: Elastic band Car tires Basketball

Resilience Ability to resist shocks without breaking Examples: Helmet Car bumpers Highway barriers

Ductility Ability to be stretched without breaking Examples: Metal being stretched into wires

Malleability Ability to be flattened or bent without breaking Examples Metals bent into shape

Stiffness Ability to retain their shapes when subjected to various constraints Examples Bridge floors Framkeworks

Other Properties Other properties that are useful in construction include Resistance to corrosion Resists oxidation (rusting) by water, salts and certain fumes Electrical conductivity Is able to carry an electric current Or is not able = insulator Thermal conductivity Is able to transmit heat
