Presentation transcript:

Introduction Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a major vegetable cash crops which contributes considerably to the food security system in India. India annually produces 25 to 28 million tonnes of potato from 1.4 million hectare land. Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Bihar are the major potato producing states. Highest productivity of the crop is observed in West Bengal and Gujarat.

Climatic Requirements Temperature: Potato is grown in temperate region which require fertile soil and sufficient soil moisture. Good tuber growth occurs at temperatures range in 16 to 22 oC and tuber growth virtually stops if temperature rise above 30 oC. High temperature during growing period affected the size of leaflets, reduced photosynthetic, tuber formation and development.

Climatic Requirements Day Length and Light Intensity: Potato grows well under long day conditions. Sunshine along with cooler nights are essential for reducing disease incidences. Relative Humidity: The relative humidity during growing season should be 85 to 95 % to prevent excessive water loss from the plants.

Soil Well drained, sandy loam or medium loam soil are essential for TPS Nursery as light soils promote uniform soil temperatures and ease in transplanting. Soils for potato nursery should be friable, moist, fertile, aerated, fairly deep and with sufficient organic matter and humus. It is advisable to use adequate quantity of compost or Vermicompost for raising TPS nursery.
