RWS 100: the natives are restless 2

Let’s meet Danah Boyd and our final text for the class! Rhetorical Teams take 8-10 minutes to quickly coordinate your answers to the questions from the Wiki.

Team #5 Ryan Bennett Brianna Bigornia Chloe Jorgensen Gregory Royse Brianne Sheridan

Introducing the Digital Native!

So, what did you think? This is certainly a more complex and nuanced argument than the ones we have heard from Carr and Thompson.(And features a number of claims!) What did you think her main point is? What do you thin her “project” is, what is she advocating for?

Do you agree with her. Do you disagree Do you agree with her? Do you disagree? What did you like, what did you think was BS? How do you view this text in relation to Thompson’s techno utopianism and Carr’s techno fearmongering?

(watch videos)

Take out a piece of paper. Activity: Take out a piece of paper. Answer this question: Are you a “Digital Native?” Write down why or why not. Feel free to say how you feel about the term, too. (be prepared to share your answer and to hand it in.)

“I am resolutely opposed to all innovation, all change, but I am determined to understand what’s happening. Because I don’t choose just to sit and let the juggernaut roll over me. Many people seem to think that if you talk about something recent, you’re in favor of it. The exact opposite is true in my case. Anything I talk about is almost certainly something I’m resolutely against. And it seems to me the best way to oppose it is to understand it. And then you know where to turn off the buttons.”  ― Marshall McLuhan

Charting the Text You and your team need to determine how you will chart the text. How you chart your text is completely up to you! You could use Hypothesis. You could use the wiki. You could have a shared hard copy. You will need to work together on it. You don’t have to track every single paragraph, however, you must do these things: The project and main argument must be identified The audience for the text must be identified Each claim must be identified Each type of evidence must be identified Each rhetorical strategy must be identified

On Thursday, you need to write on your team page on your wiki how your team plans to chart it. Your fully charted text is due on 12/6. (hint: do it before Thanksgiving) Hand in a copy to me and/or post it online.

Homework: Your Rhetorical Analysis blog post on a song is due Sunday night. Decide how you will chart the text by Thursday. Read pages 19 & 34 in your course reader. You will be quizzed (so bring a device).
