St Luke’s Church of England School Newsletter 04 March 2016 Message from Mrs Tyler Thank you to Mrs Patel for organising our Book Week and to the parent who kindly paid for the author’s visit on Tuesday. The children had great fun listening to Adrian Beckingham’s animated storytelling as he led workshops for each class. It was great to welcome Danny back in order that all the children could swap their World Book Day vouchers at her bookstall. However, I think Danny’s hardest job was judging the Book Day character parade - well done to Finley (‘Bob the Builder’), Zoe (‘The Lorax’ by Dr Seuss) and Hannah (‘Goth Girl’ by Chris Riddell). We were so impressed with all the children’s outfits – thank you so much for the hard work you put into these with your children. This morning KS1 led a moving Mothering Sunday assembly! They talked about the origins of Mothers’ Day and how special their mums were to them in so many different ways. They shared their poems and paintings and rounded off the assembly with a special tea party for their mums, with homemade cakes of course! There is never a dull moment at St Luke’s! Next week is International Week and we are looking forward to welcoming many of you into school to share your traditions with the children. I hope as many of you as possible will also be able to join us at our International Evening on Thursday. Don’t forget to get your tickets from Miss Martin! Well done to Year 4 who came 3rd out of 18 schools who entered the Waste Prevention School Competition. They won £100 for their eco-school project book, which has to be spent on waste prevention initiatives at the school! Not only is it International Week at SLS, but Tuesday March 8th is also International Women's Day! Two of our parents, Alix and Sherine are hosting a fundraising coffee morning after drop off, in aid of Rosa, the UK fund for women and girls (rosauk.org). If you would like to come, please email alix_klein@yahoo.co.uk so that we have an idea of numbers. Just let the staff know you are a St Luke’s customer when paying. News from Reception We have had a busy Book Week! We started the week looking at the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, using it to describe the characters and retelling the story. On Tuesday the children had a fantastic storytelling session with Adrian Beckingham. They acted out an Aboriginal ‘dreamtime’ story about the duck-billed platypus. The children had a thoroughly enjoyable time and were eager to tell me all about it! In the outside area the children have been pretending to be frogs and jumping along marked and unmarked numberlines to help them with counting-on and addition. Throughout the week the children have also been planting grass and bean seeds in the trough tray outside, as well as weeding the planters in preparation for planting some herbs and vegetable seeds next week. The class all looked fantastic in their costumes for World Book Day - thank you for all your hard work! I hope you have an enjoyable weekend – and Mothers’ Day! KS2 Certificate of Merit Year 3 Shaun for fully participating in class discussions. Year 4 Lexie for great leadership qualities. KS2 Maths Mascot Daniel for great problem solving in Maths.
2015-16 and 2016-17 term dates are on the school website. News from KS1 We do hope you enjoyed our Mothering Sunday assembly. You will imagine that a good part of the week was helping the children prepare for this! We hope you liked the poems they wrote for you and feel sure you will agree that they are becoming wonderful poets, especially using the repeating pattern style. Of course we used lots of Maths when making our cakes for you – weighing and measuring and calculating the amount of ingredients needed. In Maths everyone has also been working at addition and subtraction, using different strategies to calculate the answers. We are looking forward to International Week next week when we will be looking at stories from different cultures. In Maths, Year 2 will be solving “empty box” problems in addition and subtraction (eg 40 + … = 62). Year 1 will be continuing to practise addition and subtraction strategies to solve word problems. News from Lower KS2 This week Year 4 have continued analysing Australian Aboriginal stories and today made some marvellous zigzag books for display. Meanwhile, Year 3 have turned their holiday photo albums into their own stories. In Maths, Year 3 have been using basic number facts in order to mentally add and subtract – it has been great to see the children effectively using and applying their knowledge from Key Stage 1. Year 4 have been recapping and using and applying their knowledge of multiplying and dividing whole and decimal numbers by 10, 100 and 1000. On Thursday we had great fun learning about the tradition of Mothering Sunday – we hope you loved the cards we made! Dates for Diary (Spring term) 2015-16 and 2016-17 term dates are on the school website.
