Tonight’s focus is on college. College planning takes time. It’s not something that is easily decided overnight.

Why College? Expected lifetime earnings: Non-high school graduate $1 million High school graduate $1.2 million Some college $1.5 million Bachelor's degree $2.1 million Master's degree $2.5 million Doctoral degree $3.4 million Professional degree $4.4 million Source: U.S. Census Bureau

College Options Technical/Vocational college 2-year college 4-year university

Deciding on a College Characteristics to consider: Location Size of campus & student body Degree programs offered Extracurricular activities Cost & Financial Aid Admission Policy Accreditation Support Services Personality of the campus

Narrowing Down Colleges Research and investigate schools. Narrow your list down to 3 schools (if possible).

Road Trip Plan time to visit the colleges you are considering! *meet with an admissions counselor -chances of admission -review cost/financial aid -graduation -job placement *take a campus tour *visit a class *talk with staff and students

NCAA Clearinghouse *If it looks as though your student/athlete may have an opportunity to participate in athletics at a Division 1 or Division 2 school next year you must be registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse. *If you have questions you may contact Marc Miller in the Wenatchee High School counseling office--665-7618 ex. 709. More information can be found at https://web1.ncaa.org/eligibilitycenter/student/index_student.html

Apply Early! All colleges have different deadlines for applying. Know your deadlines! Look for separate college scholarship application deadlines Know college deadlines for honors program Advantages to applying early: More scholarship opportunities Potentially knowing admission status earlier

Application Process A typical application packet requires: Application Transcript Standardized test scores (SAT or ACT) Letter of Recommendation (s) Personal Statement

Decisions, Decisions Compare offers. Talk with parents, teachers, and a counselor. Choose the college that’s right for you. Pay attention to deadlines to respond Contact colleges you choose not to attend.

Financial Planning Parents Personal Savings Financial Aid Other means FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Loans Work Study Scholarships Other means

How much does college cost? 2 yr degree (live at home) $3000-$5000 BA (public university) $48,000-$60,000 BA (private university) $80,000-$140,000 Law School? Add $30,000-$50,000 Medical School? Add $100,000-$140,000 Source: ACT organization

The Truth is . . . College is expensive but when there’s a will, there’s a way!

Apply for Financial Aid early! FAFSA forms can be submitted after January 1st. www.fafsa.ed.gov *Before the FAFSA can be submitted, students and parents need to apply for a PIN. www.pin.ed.gov *Complete the worksheet before Jan. 1 to be prepared for the deadline.

Seniors can also check out: Financial aid pages on college websites Scholarship search engine services such as: www.fastweb.com The Senior ~ Money Book portion of the Career Center page on the WHS website for scholarship information http://whs.wsd.wednet.edu/Faculty/Counseling/money_book.htm

Beware of . . . Financial aid scams *You should never have to pay a fee to submit the FAFSA or any scholarship application. *Consult with college before making financial commitment

WHS Scholarship Role Collect scholarship information. Publish scholarship opportunities. Liaison between providers and students. Review packets before submission. We do not fill out applications. We do not insure your child can afford college.

Upcoming dates WHS World’s Fair - A College & Career Fair -Tuesday, November 3rd 6:00-8:30 p.m. (WHS) FAFSA Night with Kevin Berg, WVC Financial Aid Director Date TBA - January
