Checks and Balances and Separation of Power Differences

Separation of Power An Enlightenment idea developed by Montesquieu that states the power of Government should be split up into at least 3 branches. The idea behind separation of power is that monarchies were becoming too powerful and would violate human rights. Legislative: Creates Laws Judicial: Interprets Laws Executive: Enforces Laws Before separation of power all the 3 branches were essentially combined.

Checks and Balances An idea that was influenced by separation of power. It is a system that prevents any one of the 3 branches from becoming too powerful.
