Unit 5

Know Make a list of five things you already know about water color as an art medium What to Know Make a list of five things you want to learn about water color and if you dont learn those things complete an internet search or ask the instructor. ( put that list aside as you work until you are done with the unit)

Unit 05.0 Overview of Supplies for Water Color The journey of learning to paint can be exciting and challenging. The materials and equipment one will need, should suit your individual needs. That choice you make depend on the final effect you want to achieve for each painting that you create. Sometimes it is hard to explain how the brush and pigments work on your paper until you try using water colors and experimenting.

Start searching for a picture of a landscape in color. I find for the beginner, that landscapes with a sky area seems to be the easiest project to start with., magazines and calendars seem to be the best recourses for image. Write down the reference information as to where you got the picture as I will ask for it later.

Materials to start. Before you go out and buy materials ask your family, neighbors or friend if they have water colors/brushes and water color paper. You will at You will need at least the primary colors such as Lemon Yellow or Hana Yellow, Cadmium Medium Red, Thalo Blue, and Ivory Black. If you can get the secondary color and a brown you will be two steps ahead. A variety of water color brushes in different sizes a must. Water color brushes-Buy the brushes that you can afford. Sable is ideal but new man-made fibers are acceptable. Suggested ½" flat and #12 or #14 round and #6 or #7 for detail. Talk to others to see what they like. See if they will let you try the paints and practice how the paints work on the paper. Different brands of paint will react to different paper types. You will also find that this unit module is a composite of techniques, experiment and expressions. Experience builds and grows as the painting journey evolves.

Start experimenting with your water color paints by making a color wheel with the provided template. Clear your work table of everything you dont need for the project. Using a piece of 9x12 heavy art paper. Trace the provided water color wheel on your art paper. Use cool water in a clean container and change water as it become muddy. Keep paper towel near by. To mix your colors find a plastic dish or tray. And learn to mix only what you think you need.

Mixing tints and shades. Start by make the center circle the true color. Add a bit of that color in your mixing tray and mix a bit of black to the true color. Make the inside circle the dark shade of the color. Take a bit more color in your mixing tray away from the shade color and add water to make it lighter. ( Dont add white water color to paints it dulls the color). Submit your water color wheel for grading.

..\Desktop\rjmore\unit_five\How_ to_Clean_Your_Paint_Brush.pdf Learn how to take care of your paint brushes. Good brushes are half of your battle in water color. You don't want to spend a lot of money on paint brushes or because you don't know how to clean them properly you can become frustrated that they fall apart.

Do a little research on your own Do not feel restricted to this unit's information. You can complete your own online searches for this topic or go to the local library or go to a book store if your very serious about getting information as it will help you understand and learn various water colorist art techniques. Do not rush through this project.

There are many others that have developed and refined the techniques of water color. These are outside link on You tube about water color and if these sight are taken off you can complete your own You tube search about water color

Once you have your photo of your landscape now what ? You will need an art eraser, a strip of scratch water color paper to test the colors before they are a applied. It is a good idea to take a piece of regular art paper and practicing the landscape scene before you apply the colors on the water color paper, masking tape, and maybe a spray bottle. Take a 6 H drawing pencil and lightly sketch a contour line of the landscape. Dont add any texture or values with the pencil. A Masonite board or flat clean hard surface that the water color paper can be taped down with the masking tape until project is completed. Water color brushes-Buy the brushes that you can afford. Sable is ideal but new man-made fibers are acceptable. ½" flat and #12 or #14 round and #6 or #7 for detail.

Continue. Masking fluid is not necessary but desirable for protecting white areas. If you dont have a water color palette tray make sure that you have another plastic plate to mix colors in water container, Purchase what you can afford. You will need at least the primary colors such as Lemon Yellow or Hana Yellow, Cadmium Medium Red, Thalo Blue, and Ivory Black. Other colors that might be needed are a brown and green. Depending on your landscape scene you might need more colors. Tints are made by add water to a color to lighten it up. Shades of colors can be made when you add black. (be careful with black a little can do a lot). Paper towels are a must.

Very Helpful Tips Lightly tape the paper to the board with masking tape and be very careful when pulling the tape off when youre done. Practice using the water colors before you put the colors on the water color paper. See how the paints and brushes move and work on regular art paper. Water coloring techniques are different from acrylic or oil paints as you apply lightest colors to darkest values. It is important to do complete washes first. A wash is when you get the paper wet with clear clean water, then apply a very wet color on the wash of water and let the area bleed. This is ideal for a sky area. Let the washes dry before moving to the next area. You will notice that the water makes the paper curls and ripple. Water color paper will also curl but is made to absorb more water. Over working any art paper will give you undesirable results. Dab the color off with a dry paper towel if you make a mistake. Dont ever rub the paper.

Final- Water Color Landscape Project Use the grading criteria/rubric below as teachers expectations..\Desktop\rjmore\unit_five\student_unit_five_grading_critiera.wpd.pdf Visit the following website below for Students water color examples but notice I show you those you need more work and practice to those who have basic skills and a students who has reached proficiency. Submit your work for grading Look back at your questions about what you wanted to learn? Did those questions get answered in either an internet search that you did, from the reading material or from the teacher. If they did not now is a good time to ask the instructor when you send in your work for grading. Please provide the resource(reference information as to where you go the image if you can scan the original picture and send it with
